While I wouldn't be surprised if the people at the Kennedy Center really are relieved that Trump is not going to the gala, I assume they only thanked him for not attending because he himself* said it was because he didn't want to disrupt the night for the honorees. A couple of those being honored said they would not come if Trump was there.
Which is to say that the Kennedy Center is not technically disrespecting Trump, although one could speculate that they might issue a more regretful statement if Obama were in the same position.
*Ok, probably a staffer since Trump wouldn't write something so tactful
