I work in a Virology Lab and while alcohol will kill some viruses, we've found bleach is by far the best on the more hardy viruses (for example, we do a lot of work with parvo and it's a tough little bugger, alcohol will not kill it). Now of course just because it kills viruses doesn't mean it's good for you, otherwise I'd just recommend an autoclave.
