Oh certainly! In cases of murder suicide I think often the suicide is decided first and once the person has convinced themselves they should die, they feel entitled to make that choice for 'lesser' human beings. Besides just getting revenge or 'setting things straight' I expect they sometimes come to the conclusion that they are doing the people they are killing a favor.
While I don't think modern culture supports it anymore than previous cultures, it certainly doesn't help when it encourages everything leading up to the action and then shrugs when questioned.
