That's probably not unique to drivers. I think that probably happens to a lot of people who get 1099s. Or who get W2s and don't calculate their withholdings appropriately. Or who get W2s and also have other taxable income, like interest or retirement distributions. Or who owe income tax for some other reason. That risk pretty much comes with living in the United States and having taxable income.

Lots of freelancers get 1099s. Sticking with drivers, owner-operators who own their own vehicles and drive for a living have been getting 1099s and doing their taxes for years, often with an additional layer of complexity if they have an LLC or S-Corp.
