For my purposes here, a savant is someone who has extraordinary understanding in some field, but lacks certain rudimentary mental skills. A prodigy is the same, but has the usual complement of such skills, and attains that understanding early on.
So essentially they're both geniuses - which all of us are supposed to be, since there is so much about the universe that cries out to be understood...but of course we're not. And if we're content to write it all off as "luck of the draw", we have no reason to inquire any further as to why that might be.
