Quote: It's been just about a year since God got on the horn with Michele Bachmann and told her that He wanted her to run for president. I guess He was watching the Iowa results roll in last night with the rest of us, because it seems like He called her back this morning to tell her never mind…

Oh man, FUCK YEAH! Thanks Crumb, needed that.

Quote: In the wake of the Tea Party, the Occupy movement, and a dozen or more episodes of real rebellion on the streets, in the legislatures of cities and towns, and in state and federal courthouses, this presidential race now feels like a banal bureaucratic sideshow to the real event – the real event being a looming confrontation between huge masses of disaffected citizens on both sides of the aisle, and a corrupt and increasingly ideologically bankrupt political establishment, represented in large part by the two parties dominating this race.

Let’s put it this way. What feels more like a real news story – Newt Gingrich calling Mitt Romney a liar for the ten millionth time, or this sizzling item that just hit the wires by way of the Montana Supreme Court:

HELENA — The Montana Supreme Court restored the state's century-old ban on direct spending by corporations on political candidates or committees in a ruling Friday that interest groups say bucks a high-profile U.S. Supreme Court decision granting political speech rights to corporations…

A group seeking to undo the Citizens United decision lauded the Montana high court, with its co-founder saying it was a "huge victory for democracy."

"With this ruling, the Montana Supreme Court now sets up the first test case for the U.S. Supreme Court to revisit its Citizens United decision, a decision which poses a direct and serious threat to our democracy," John Bonifaz, of Free Speech For People, said in a statement.

Western Tradition Partnership, Inc. v. Attorney General of Montana

It's hard to say which is more amazing -- the analysis of the five-justice majority concluding that Citizens United doesn't establish any per se rules and is factually distinguishable because the record in this case establishes that the Montana law under consideration is supported by a compelling state interest, or the view of the two dissenters that Citizens United, although indistinguishable and dispositive, is nonetheless a steaming mountain of extraordinarily malodorous shit.

Perry thinks the US should re-occupy Iraq.

Is this theater of the absurd, fringing it to make the rest of the hawks look like they hold "middle ground", simple Perry ad-libbing mouth footery, or is Perry figuring, "Fuck it, it's not like I have a chance now anyway, might as well say some crazy shit!"

Or does Rick Perry really think the US should re-invade Iraq? Because that would make him a lot dumber than I thought.

Also, "literally the speed of light"

Quote:
The news is filled today with the fact that Newt Gingrich's campaign has been revived by ultra-Zionist Sheldon Adelson's $5 million contribution to a Gingrich Super PAC.

National Public Radio says that South Carolina television stations will soon be pouring out ads attacking Romney. NPR reporters gave Adelson's Israel cause just one vague phrase, but the New York Times is more forthcoming: in the jump, it says that Gingrich's recent statement that Palestinians are an invented people paid off for him.

Mr. Adelson echoed Mr. Gingrich’s [invented people] comments within days in an interview with Haaretz, an Israeli newspaper.

“Read the history of those who call themselves Palestinians, and you will hear why Gingrich said recently that the Palestinians are an invented people,” Mr. Adelson said.

The Times also hints at the Jewish sweepstakes element of the campaign, emphasizing big Romney Jews who called Adelson to lobby him against the gift:

Fred Zeidman, a Texas energy executive who is another prominent Jewish political contributor and a supporter of Mr. Romney, said he was among those who called Mr. Adelson, and they talked about why he was still backing Mr. Gingrich.

The Jerusalem Post headline is pretty blunt: "Jewish billionaire made donation to keep Republican candidate competitive in S. Carolina primary, 'Washington Post' reports."

My friend Scott McConnell writes in an email:

I can't think of a recent incident in American politics (Andrew Young's firing?) where the power of the lobby is illustrated in such a direct way, and with the potential to be noticed by so many people. If the Adelson ads do real damage to Romney in South Carolina (as well they should!) thousands of committed Romney supporters, many of them youngish and very high achieving Mormons) will take direct notice of a phenomenon which had before never touched them in any way they were aware of, and to which they had surely never given much thought.
New order for Republican primary battles: Iowa, Adelson, New Hampshire, South Carolina

Wanna kill ten minutes? This article examines the apparent paradox that what the Tea Party wants is well expressed by Romney, yet for some reason, they reject him. :chin:

Mitt Romney, the Heroic Quarter-Billionaire | Mother Jones

And keep in mind that, with Mitt Romney, venture capitalist, carrying your banner in 2012, you will finally get to submit your capsized vision of social class to the verdict of the people—the actual flesh-and-blood people, that is, not the corporate "people" who make up the S&P 500. You will get to defend exactly the sort of "person" your movement has longed to defend since it was birthed by a CNBC reporter almost three years ago to the cheers of a bunch of derivatives traders in Chicago.

You will get to explain your peculiar conviction that the way to react to a gigantic slump brought on by frenzied finance is to unshackle Wall Street. You will get to line up behind a heroic businessman, like those rugged, resourceful fellows in the Ayn Rand novels you love. You will get to go into battle for the job creators, which is what all capitalists are, right? (Well, okay, maybe not the guys at Bain Capital, the particular outfit where Romney made his pile, but the theory is all that really matters, isn't it?)

It really makes you wonder why Romney is going to so much effort to keep them from speaking out about his birth in Mexico. It makes it look as though he has something to hide.

NOBODY KNOWS, that is the problem! Is that even important to Vattel? The Romney campaign hasn't even released their Mexican birth certificates! What are they hiding? I have looked in to this and I conclude that we need a lot more information about how Mitt Romney was born in Mexico. I think it's probably very likely that Mitt Romney was born a subject of the Spanish Empire.
