The "drip coffee" which equals "Sanka" and :shudder: Folgers and other large market brands is like our beer--fucking close to water.

I think the Rise of Starbucks came from the realization that, "hey, we don't have to drink runny diarrhea anymore!"

Mostly that they don't make instant by filling little bags with dust from the floor of the coffee factory. Teabags get the worst product in a very literal way. Instant coffee's just processed coffee.

I think it's also because they excel at making coffee taste like not-coffee. The stuff tastes vile to me straight, but if I had to fit in with a coffee crowd, I'd probably be able to tolerate some of their more homeopathic coffee formulations.

I'm not sure where one is getting the homeopathic coffee in the US. Definitely not a problem in my 'burg.

It's usually what you get here (Texas) in dinners and places like that. Not in coffee houses.

Oh yeah, diners and Waffle Houses are the worst place for coffee. I swear to god they must reuse the grounds or somethin.

Well that was the situation years ago. I remember driving across The Great Expanse suffering such diners when I lost it and demanded we visit "Laramie."

"Why?" cried my hostage driving companion.

"BECAUSE THAT'S WHERE THE MONSTERS AND ALIENS ALWAYS LAND IN THE 1950S MOVIES!!"

Yes, I tend to speak in "allcaps" when I drive. I did not expect anything resembling an espresso or, well, what most people would recognize as coffee. That is when I discovered the University of Wyoming--and the University of Wyoming discovered what a serial killer is [Stop that!--Ed.] No, seriously, I was reading a book on it and shared it with a person at a CAFE near the campus which was beyond fucking awesome. Now, note, at that stage if it was Private Baldrick making his "espresso"--"extra phlemy!"--I would have been happy. This was fantastic.

With progress, we learn to no longer tolerate inferior living. Sort of the way the English are trying not to tolerate a lack of central heating . . . and dentistry. See what I did there?

But FAST!!! I am off to purchase a maker :excited:

That is so beautiful. It looks like a cross between a copper samovar my parents bought in Turkey and a lab experiment. Not steampunky at all, imo.

Now that you've solved the espresso machine problem, it's time for you to go all the way. This is the greatest espresso of all time. OF ALL TIME. We used to buy it from the bar and on the way back the car would smell like paradise. I will never, ever forget that smell.

Just may have to get some! I "indulged" on some local offered beans, but I am bookmarking that and will get some at the end of the month!

Sounds yum, but this brand is the best I've had.

Fortunately you wouldn't have to truck all the way down to Providence to buy a fresh-roasted pound of either one of these. Either one is really quite good, though I think the Gumutindo has a slight edge over the Yrgacheffe. Many hours we've spent sitting outside amusing ourselves people-watching Wickendon Street with all the Brown students and sundry other Eastside denizens amidst the aroma of coffee-roasting wafting through the air. When they get to making the French and Espresso roasts the smell of the beans almost burning can get pretty intense.

Srlsly--which is more srsly than srsly--it is awesome! It even earns a :awesome:

This is not as strong as espressos I usually get, but it is not bitter, has a nice aftertaste. It makes a very nice mocha. Opponents to mochas and the like will, understandably, claim you are using chocolate to cover-up inferior coffee. This is not the case. Just a little bit of chocolate melds well!

Coffee House Northwest at Trinity and Burnside PDX. Ask for a 12 oz caramel Latte and tell 'em sparks sent you.

Caution: They are addictive.

I'm thrilled you like it. That lack of an aftertaste is what locked me in when I was a wee one. Every other coffee tasted like crap in comparison.
