hey liv wanna compare notes? I've been able to keep spambot registrations down to about 4-5 a day, which is easy enough to check through. I had a slight uptick recently and went shopping at vbulliten.org for fresh ammo.

I'd love to, raven, thank you. I just went to ban Doctor X's buddeh rndtrett and saw that we have two new registrants even though I frikkin disallowed all new user registrations yesterday. Obviously spammers have completely defeated vB, at least this old version of it.
eta Okay I see how they pulled off that miracle. They registered just before I closed registrations and clicked the activation link a couple of hours ago.

liv, I sent you a pm with the anti-spam add-on I've been using, and with the configuration choices I made.
basically, the add-on (on top of doing a lot of other stuff that I might like some day but which doesn't directly address spambot eradication) lets me use two forms of human identifaction, instead of having to choose 1 per vanilla vbulletin. I'm requiring a recaptcha image and answering a randomly selected question. currently I have about 8 questions, and I change them up every few weeks when it looks like the spambot-masters have figured them all out.

vm installed the hack (love that one page moderation/question setup, raven) and I've reenabled registrations. Now let us never speak of this again.
