I've seen those, and although I like them I find them a little austere for this particular gig.

If you want to get crafty, find a floating frame that's too big (Target has some with cherry frames), then put faux stained glass where the matte would usually show.
Buy small transparent colored glass pieces (sold for mosaics), clear glass adhesive, and black grout. Tape off the center where the post card will show and the edges where the wood frame goes. Glue the colored glass right to the top of the frame glass and grout (which requires some cleaning and sponges and stuff)

I love that idea. I have grout and thin set from when I tiled an unfinished hearth. I could get super obsessive making a mosaic.

What do you suppose people use to make hair wraps? For friendship bracelets I use embroidery floss (expensive) or hemp (too coarse). I'm not doing a hair wrap (gross) but something similar.

No idea what people use, but what about very soft leather?

I need something pretty thin, though. Also, expensive! Cool idea though.

Re: Crafters to me! Other hobbyists welcome.
It looks like most tutorials I found called for embroidery floss in doing hair wraps. Typically three times the length of the thing you are wrapping.
I don't know what you are trying to do, or how much you will need, but super fine yarn in a nice slick fiber might work. The lowest weight you can find of the sort they use to make faux lace and doilies.
I bought a hank of super fine Cotton/Silk blend for like six dollars to play around with making little lacey flower rosettes. It was crazy tough to work with though, because it is totally like crocheting with thread. Too fussy for me and not relaxing. I gave up on it but give props to the ladies of yesteryear.
I actually have been trying to think up another project to use it, so tell us what you are using it for,

It turns out embroidery floss comes way cheaper than I realized, so I picked up a couple colors. You know me, I can't say shit before I do it. Will post a pic in a bit.

Re: Crafters to me! Other hobbyists welcome.
Walking stick finish suggestions needed. Kiddo found the stick, which was almost done as found. It's bent but still nicely balanced and is a total Hobbit stick and Kiddo loves it.
Hubby cut the ends and cut off the little nubby branches and belt sanded to the nice knots that remain. I hand sanded it to ready to finish status (while my brain Buttheaded out about me polishing knobs and stuff).
I am thinking just polyurethane...but am open to suggestion.

A metal band shrunk onto the end will prevent splitting. A simpler alternative is to lash the end with strong thread or wire.
I suppose you could find or make a rubber foot - though that does tend to spoil the natural aesthetic.

Metal end already on order, since my dad is a metal worker. He just brought over the walking stick stand he made us

I like a marine varnish called spar, it buffs up beautifully. I think Chuck used it for his paddle.

For a hobbit look, why not wrap a leather strap around the top for a handle. Also have a loop of leather to use for a wrist strap.

Re: Crafters to me! Other hobbyists welcome.
God, I am having a brain fart moment. Somewhere out there is a glorious, sweet, and funny essay about a little boy and his summer stick. All the adventures of boy and stick over a blissful summer. I can't for the life of me remember the author or where I read it.
Of course google is no help, all the results are either porno or advocating child abuse.
Stupid brain, not stupid working.
But best wishes to Kiddo and his awesome stick! May they have many adventures together!

Didn't Harlan Ellison have a post apocalyptic story about a boy and his stick? I think they made a movie about it.

Re: Crafters to me! Other hobbyists welcome.
During the Seventies, when pet rocks were all the rage, I had a gorgeous stick I called my pet stick. Apparently that childishness annoyed my brother, because one day he broke it into pieces and threw it out behind my back. Asshole.
