I haven't yet found a superior enough archiver to move away from the basics. Fancier formats don't save you that
much space except in special cases, and can be a pain to use on restricted computers.
When using Windows, I just use the zip archiver internal to Windows Commander
, which is way more than just a file archiver... Under linux, I use open-source tar
. Under DOS, I use old-fashioned PKZIP
. Hard to find these days, PKWARE doesn't let you download it from their site, but it's still shareware and I got it so nyah.
