Default HAHA! This is becoming a comedy of errors...

So, as I've posted here recently, I have pretty much decided to sell this old house - falling apart as it is - and move on to greener pastures. Part of my rationale in this is that the house is becoming a money pit for ME (being so old), but property values are so good that I can still get a good market price for it from someone who will either gut it and remodel it or even just raze the place.

Anyway, I think the house is mad at me, because this morning, the water heater that "serves" my master bathroom (an addition) decided to EXPLODE AND FLOOD THE BACKYARD.

Ain't life grand? :D

Well, at least you can laugh about it (here, anyway). It's a good thing it flooded your backyard--it could have flooded inside. My grandparents' did that once--instead of getting to dig into after-church home cooked dinner, we all had to dig into cleaning up.

Yep, better the yard than your bedroom. Water heaters are cheap. We bought one at Lowes and installed it ourselves for like 150.00....we needed someone to help with the welding (called "sweating" the pipes in this case for some reason), but perhaps you know a handyman?

Heh. Yah, I definitely thought that right off the bat (better the yard than the house!) The whole side yard is waterlogged but after frantically running into the bedrooms along that side to check for seepage (none) I couldn't help but laugh at the timing of it. I mean, if I hadn't just closed that home equity loan I would be screwed (wouldn't have had ANY spare cash to replace it).

Lady - yes, in fact, I called my grandpa right away ('cuz I wasn't sure where to turn the water valve off at) and he told me that if I buy one at Home Depot or Lowe's ($150-200) the handyguy who works on their apts. can install it for me no problem on Saturday. Fortunately I have another 1 1/2 bathrooms so it won't be a major inconvenience.

Oh and vm, I don't blame your curse. Much. :P

:flood: hehe, thanks liv!

Awww, don't be so hard on yourself. I'm sure you've got plenty of good years left in ya.

Have you looked into some assisted living apartments?

It's actually soldering not welding </nitpick> and be glad you got someone to help you with it. I know from personal experience it's not as easy as it looks. I tried to do it myself and ended up having to call a plumber to do it over again. He was very nice and didn't laugh at me.

This is pretty interesting... my mother is going through a very similiar thing right now. After my brother and sister leave for college, she's going to sell the house (maybe even just after my brother leaves), and buy a couple smaller condos (depending on whether or not I'm coming back to Boston for grad school, which I very well might).

The reasons are basically similiar: the house is too damn big now, too much work to take care of, the basement keeps flooding, its old as hell, utilities too expensive, etc. etc.

It's actually surprising how inexpensive condos are (in the Boston area, at least) compared to houses...

This may seem funny now, but I think you may be right about the house being mad at you. You should proceed very carefully. Read Stephen King novels and rent horror movies until you're completely familiar with all the tricks the house might still play. It doesn't want you to leave. :ghost:

Maybe you should be out before :pumpkin: ...

They say never take the first offer, and if you get an offer right off the bat your asking price is too low. I am however not a professional, so take that for what it's worth. :)

LOL. This is arguable...

vm - indeed I have heard the same advice, but see the house is not on the market yet. It has to do with my neighbors and friends Sandy & Fred of the last 8 years (I've lived here for almost 10 but didn't meet them til I got Dempsey, they are the ones that have the other boxer). Anyway, he is an architect. One of their friends and another architect, Dave, bought the house next door to *them* about a year ago and went about gutting and remodeling it entirely (for his own home), and ended up enjoying the process so much that he cashed in his partnership at an architectural firm to go around buying houses and rehabbing/selling them. Anyway, at the same time, Fred has been wanting to buy an income property in the area.

Long story short, the other night I went with Sandy to the Angels-Red Sox game and mentioned my decision. Today she was driving by and saw me in the driveway and stopped to chat and indicated that the two of them are interested in talking to me about making a deal. In my conversation with her, I'd mentioned a pretty high figure for what I thought I'd be able to list it for, so I assume she passed that along.

Anyway, haven't talked to them yet so it's all up in the air, but an interesting possibility nonetheless.

Well, I'll tell ya what...if you can move your house down here to Vermillion, SD (it's a small town right in the "reservoir tip" of SouthEastern SD), then I'll give you ten crisp, clean, $100 bills for it. :yup: :D

That might take too much doing, but I do have a POS Dodge Stratus that you could get yourself into for about that much...Interested?

Oh okay, Lauri. That sounds great then. Hopefully your neighbors wouldn't try to screw ya on the deal. You might still want to get your own appraisal first, just to be sure. Business is business to a lot of people, and they'll take their own grandmother for a ride if they can profit from it.

There's my Sunday morning cynicism for ya! :)

Well, if you'll take over the payments on the car that I currently own (less than $9,000 total left to pay off!), then you've got a deal! :P
