Damn you for having an office. We have open space, and my team is moving into a more open open space next year. This is enough to annoy me.

Re: First World Problems
When I started here, I shared a four-person office with 3 other people, and it was great! Then I bounced around open floorplans for a couple years, and now I have a shared office again. There are 4 desks, but not nearly the space for 4 people. There were 4 of us to start, but 2 moved out because it was untenable. So when they moved those boxes onto the empty desks, I was happy to hear it was just boxes, and they didn't come with new people.

Re: First World Problems
New first world problem:
Mrs. Reasons decided to get a 4K TV for the family this Christmas. Unfortunately, she underestimated how much bigger the new TV is - it doesn't fit in the armoire we have.
It's currently crooked with one leg sticking off the edge - a small piece of wood is keeping it steady.
I would have another first world problem, but a quick search revealed how to reset the Wii's video output settings so I could make it compatible with the new A/V receiver. It's an amazing 480i resolution on a 4K TV.

All of the appliances in my building are breaking at the same time. Our stove is out of commission, along with the dryer, and the washer's on its way out.

Re: First World Problems
I AM COMPLAINING ABOUT MOVIES AGAIN.
So after Filmstruck shuttered, I had planned to go through my Fandor queue until the new Criterion service starts up. But then, Fandor was sold to some shady media conglomerate or something, and they fired almost all their staff and hired some part time skeleton crew to keep it running until they re-launch it as another generic streaming site to compete with all the other generic streaming sites. I figured I'd stick around, though, and watch their existing catalog while it's still there.
But then, they decided out of the blue that my payment information needed to be updated, which it didn't. It hasn't changed. But I'm like, "Fine. I'll just enter it again," and I do and I get error messages, and I keep getting these stupid emails telling me to update it, and I swear I tried like 20 times in different browsers and everything, and I emailed support like five times about it, and it won't take my money, and they shut down my account for nonpayment.
And it's snowing and overcast and I really wanted to watch some movies, and all we have is Netflix, which has an awful selection. I've pretty much seen everything I want to see on there already.
I know I'm mostly mad about it for selfish reasons, but I actually do think it's a really bad thing how these big corporations are trying to get everyone doing all the same things at the same times in service of their profits, swallowing up and destroying everything that doesn't appeal to a large enough market.
And whenever anyone talks about it, otherwise normal people start talking about 'content' and 'properties' and 'ROI' and shit like they work in mergers and acquisitions.

I was waiting on my build to finish, then I got distracted reading and someone merged to master in front of me, now I have to rebase and rebuild.
You could watch it in real time if you knew my work Github id.

Interesting way to put it. We are now experiencing the opposite of the cable-tv channel explosion. Choice bad, captive audiences for everyone!

Re: First World Problems
Remember the time when you could change the channel and not be faced with "This channel requires a subscription"?
Good times.
More seriously though. Pay per view has been around a long time. It's just it was only abfew channels in a block. Channel flipping now is basically a no go.

Someone was between the fridge and the cupboard so I drank the rest of the milk directly from the carton.

I just noticed there are 168,965 replies and 12,833,966 views in the countdown from one million thread.
Now the little OCD number guy inside me hates you people. Why view a thread more than actually count in it? If you view it count. You should be done already. 12 times over.
Hmmmpf!

I don't believe real people have about an eighty-to-one read:post ratio in that thread. I blame spiders.

The part that drives me nuts is that the technology is there to provide a real diversity of options, but every time anything classified as 'niche' gets going, some big corporation "leverages" it and waters it down or just outright kills it in pursuit of larger audiences. It's a cycle that just keeps repeating itself.
It happened to a whole lot of independent theaters, especially once Landmark started getting shitty. Around here, Landmark has like 80% overlap with AMC and other chains, and there's an antitrust lawsuit against them from a few of the remaining independent theaters for pushing exclusivity arrangements for the few independent films they do show.
So, without those theaters as options anymore, then you'd go find less mainstream movies at video rental stores. For a good long time there, there was some diversity in that, too. But then Blockbuster started dominating that market, and nostalgia aside, Blockbuster was just that: Blockbusters. Their selection always sucked.
So then, Netflix came out with their DVD rentals, so that filled the gap for a while, but when they moved to streaming, their DVD selection started dwindling rapidly to the point that it's practically worthless, and the streaming service, well, you know.
But there were other streaming services that served "niche" audiences. But now this. Now those are gone, and getting turned into Netflix competitors too.
And everyone's getting screwed except the corporations. If you want to see new mainstream releases, ha ha, they're going to be scattered over maybe 3-4 different services. If you want to see older classics or 'arthouse' or anime or something, you're even worse off, because those services are being shut down and incorporated into those big services, except they're not even the focus. You'll have to subsidize the cost of all those big expensive movies first, and then dig around in the catalog trying to find what you want.
A lot of excess words to say that growth for growth's sake is the ideology of the cancer cell.
