Default internet fundraising (for Roland)

Roland asked for more details about Fundraising that was done on a parenting BB I'm a part of so here are some more details...

LAdyShea is Correct the BB is called Sybermoms Just reading the opening paragraphs gives you a good Idea of what it's about.

This year quite a few of the members decided to be a part of the 3-day walk for breast cancer (held at different days in different cities all over north america) They walked under the team name Syber strollers. AS a community they fundraised thru the BB on the sybermoms website. They held auctions for things donated by members of the BB, ranging from cookies from Aust, hand made jewlery, knited things, blankets and even (one of the most popular) Sex toys.

Now the paid members at SM have things like titles and Avs but in order to use them you have to have "points" which you earn by posting (and by stealing from other members, it's a great game) YOu could for a donation buy points, which you can use for changing not just your AV and title but the Av's and titles of other members (and if your "gifted" an Av you can't change it for three days)

One lady donated money to a stroller for every picture of a turtle or monkey that was mailed to her.

And the most emotional and amazing way money was earned (IMO) was started by one lady and then done by two others after....They shaved their heads bald. Each lady raised around a thousand dollares each for this. It was amazing and emotional and the most wonderful think I'd ever seen, not just for the money but for the support for all women that have lost their hair because they have cancer.

They are going to be walking again in 2005 and hopfully we'll be able to raise even more money towards breast cancer research next year.

These women and their generosity blew me away.

That's just astounding, Julie, the depth of generosity of everyone involved as well as the sheer amount of money raised. Thank you for posting about it. It's downright inspiring.

Thanks Julie! I will have to look into this further, because I think it's an awesome idea. I really like the auction part as well; personally, I don't have a lot of extra cash, but I certainly have lots of junk I could unload. I wonder if this would work here or at II (or even doing something together at various boards, since many of us post at several of the same ones). We'd need to agree on a charity of course, but I think it's a very cool idea. I will have to mull it over a bit more.

One question--did they auction everything just within the board, or did they put it up on ebay or something?

Within the board. They actually suht down the entire board and the only forum you could see was the auction forum and the only posts you could see were the auction threads and you couldnt post on them unless you were bidding.

They have a forum called the "hall of Lame " HOL for short where if you're a compleat moron or really stupid a troll or a spammer you can be thrown in (usually for 3 days but sometimes they "forget" to let you out on time) while you are there you can only see the HOL and you have no access to things like your PM or to change your Av....It was very effective at keeping people from chatting on the auction threads.

Plus they had set up a sister froums on a free easyboard to chat on.

It was very unique in the way they did it and the amount of money that was given is astounding.

I think a BB like II could easily do something like that, and raise a lot of money for the chosen cause ( I like cancer research myself it's something that effects everybody regardless of age/sex/race/religion) Just imagine what could be done if it was set up as a competition between somewhere like II and CF with the board that raised the most money getting the bragging rights!

CF would so kick II's ass, though. They just have so many more active members it wouldn't even be a contest. It would still be a blast, mind you. :)

It would also serve a great cause and therefore "bragging rights" could be maintained by all.

Twisted...I like it.

I came across this post while googling to see what kind of press we were getting. I'm bumping it to let everyone know that we're holding another auction this week. This time to benefit Tsunami relief efforts. All proceeds go to the American Friends Service Committee.
24 Hour auction starts February 9, 05 at 8pm EST and ends 8pm Thursday Feb 10.

LIVE Auction starts February 10, 05 at 9pm EST and runs until we run out of items.

You can read about at www.sybermoms.com on the front page.

I am actually also doing the 3-Day Breast Cancer event this fall in Atlanta. By participating, I've agreed to raise at least $2100 for breast cancer research--which is a whole heck of a lot of money to me! RA's mother had a thankfully minor (in the grand scheme of things) diagnosis of breast cancer this past year--although to her and to us it was a cause for a great deal of worry and concern. As a result, when my friend mentioned that she was walking this fall--I decided to join her. Plus, they have tents to sleep in--and who can pass up that kind of opportunity? The link in my signature should go to my fundraising page, and you can see my progress and who's offered support. (I'm still in the early stages, right now!)

WTG On doing the walk!! I wish I was healthy enough to do the walk. Instead I'll be helping sybermoms by donating things for the auction (BTW we raised $21,635 in two days for the tsunami relief efforts) I'll be out cheering on my friends doing the walk and being damn proud of the money I'm going to help raise.

I'm sure witha bit of help from your friends ;) (HINT HINT YOU GUYS!) that you will have no problems reaching that $2100 dollars :)
