Default Can Lysol/Purell Prevent Herpes/HPV through skin?

Here's my theory: Lysol and Purell can kill a lot of germs. If you have casual sex with an extra-strong condom, then use antiseptic/disinfectant afterwards on the skin, then it might be possible to never get herpes or HPV, which can be spread through viral shedding and direct skin contact. Any thoughts on this idea?

I think there are better STD prevention methods than smearing Purell on my junk, since disinfectants can't kill all the viruses. They say it kills "99.99% of common germs." That's not really good enough for me. Anyway, I didn't think hand sanitizers were particularly effective against viruses; they're more for killing bacteria.

Use a condom with spermacide on it for added protection as spermacide has been proven to be helpful in killing various viruses. Not all the time, so don't count on it 100%, but it does help. Added no-baby-maybe and virus protection in one.

I'm not referring to the genitals, but the skin around the genitals. So you're saying that purell's claim of 99.99% of germs primarily applies to bacteria and not viruses? If that is accurate, then it sounds like false advertising.

One, lysol ain't made for skin. Especially genital-area skin. Ouch.

Two, Purell claims on its website:

Quote:
The PurellŪ product is a refreshing instant hand sanitizer that kills 99.99% of most common germs that may cause disease.
Most of these are indeed bacteria, and the ingredients in Purell and other hand sanitizers work better against bacteria than viruses.

One thing to consider is irritation, which can cause breaks in the skin--making you more, not less, susceptible to pathogens. Better IMO to ask your partner to be tested, use condoms regularly if they're unsure of their status (or you are), and just be as careful as possible.

Want to avoid Herpes/HPV/other STD's?

Abstain from sex with strangers. Find someone you feel you can trust to stay in a LTR. Ask them to get tested. And also, get tested yourself.

I've never had casual sex in my life. The question is how to have casual sex without catching anything.

Applied after sex, not before. The disinfection would occur before inflammation.

Though this analogy fails on a number of levels, your question is almost like asking how to play Russian roulette without catching a bullet in your brain. There is no fool-proof answer. You can do things to minimize your risks, but they'll always be there. At least with our current understanding and technology.

Doesn't matter. Some viruses are able to persist outside the body/cells for a period of time. Using Lysol or Purell (ethyl alcohol) will have an immediate impact on your skin, especially skin which isn't used to such harsh chemicals. The breaks don't need to be huge gashes. Microscopic breaks will be enough to allow entrance.

According to this study, Lysol takes 5 minutes to kill herpes, but rubbing alcohol kills it instantly:

(Purell uses ethyl alcohol, not isopropyl alcohol, so it's not the same as rubbing alcohol.)

I work in a Virology Lab and while alcohol will kill some viruses, we've found bleach is by far the best on the more hardy viruses (for example, we do a lot of work with parvo and it's a tough little bugger, alcohol will not kill it). Now of course just because it kills viruses doesn't mean it's good for you, otherwise I'd just recommend an autoclave.
