So I upgraded my computer to WindowsXP right after I pulled it out of the packing box and I don't see the green button after people's user names that tells whether they are online or not. Was the button removed in my absence or is it an XP issue?
Fuck yes I miss it. It kicked ass to read through a thread and be able to note....Beth is online, godfry is online, etc. If I had responded to something someone had posted and I saw the green light next to their name I would hang around and refresh the page rather than wait for the e-mail notification.
Was it a privacy issue? Because I know users can use the invisible mode so the green button isn't lit up for them.
Btw, do you use the buddy list? (Quick Links > Open Buddy List)
It pops up a separate window - which gets refreshed - showing who's online. Very cool. The green lights work here, so I don't really know what the problem is. OK I do, but I don't agree about its seriousness. But declared, decreed and defined it ... infallible.

I always disliked it because of the privacy issue. People in hidden mode had a button that was always red, which seems totally counterproductive to me since it clearly points to people who prefer not to be seen.
It was also often deceptive, showing people as online when they'd actually been gone for up to an hour. That won't be an issue once we upgrade to 3.5, and we're certainly open to making changes.
Corona688 asked about this in the original thread, and here's what I said to him:
Quote:
It's not really broken, it's a stuck in a philosophical dilemma.
In one corner we have people who want the ability to hide their online status, and in the other corner we have people who want the ability to see when others are online. Thus far we can't think of a software solution to satisfy both groups, so we decided that a member's desire for privacy is more compelling than a member's desire to know who's online at any given time.
Surely it would be satisfactory for people hiding their online status to be reported always as offline? I have thought about this during this afternoon and I can't see any problem. It meets the needs of the privacy-seekers and meets the needs of the online status seekers, so far as is possible.
