It took me a bit to figure out what made me angry on this one. At first I was just generic-angry that art is being censored. Then I thought, "you know, it is Apple's App store, they can be judicious about what they do and do not sell there." But then I got angry again because with the iPhone and the iPad you have no choice where you buy your Apps. And additionally, Apple isn't across the board with their no-nudes policy (or whatever the policy actually is) because boobs are available from a Playboy app, in addition to the last example in the quoted portion of this article So now I'm all "yeah, fuck you Apple" again.

GizmodoThe Latest Examples of Apple's Editorial Censorship

In 1933, a judge ruled that James Joyce's Ulysses wasn't obscene. In 2010, Apple has demanded editorial changes to a Ulysses graphic novel. And another based on The Importance of Being Earnest. Here are their—slightly NSFW—reasons.

In the case of Ulysses Seen, Apple demanded the removal of some (non-pornographic) nudity. And although illustrator Robert Berry offered several alternatives, such as pixelating the breasts or covering them with fig leaves, the only solution Apple deemed appropriate was the one seen above. Which basically abandons all of the original panel, sketched here:

Joyce fans will note the timing: we're two days from Bloomsday, a celebration of all things Ulysses.

In the case of a graphic novel of Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest, the objectionable nature of the content appears to be simply that two men were kissing. Meaning that this:

Can only be downloaded like this:

That's after you've already told Apple that you're 17 or older. Blacking out seven consecutive panels of a graphic novel makes that novel basically unreadable. And before you say that it's because of the partial nudity, here's a panel from Kick-Ass of a heterosexual couple that Apple didn't censor:

Yeah, I think there's a nebulous line they crossed somewhere, and it's difficult to nail down exactly what that was.

There are plenty of devices that use specific firmware, and plenty of providers that control their content, even when it's provided by third parties. But there's something a little extra insidious about one company that is a) doing all of those things, and b) that has enough market share to dictate what content is available on the market as a whole, which Apple is approaching at this point. It's almost like movie ratings, where a private organization is controlling the market, and there's really no recourse as they're not answerable to the public. So they can apply any ridiculous, capricious standards they'd like, and their market dominance ensures that people have much less access to what they want to see, regardless of whether they've bought into that system or not.

Also, I'm assuming everyone here has read about the iPad security breaches, but now also look at this. lol.

These are pretty much AT&T things, but people were exposed to these AT&T things because they purchased Apple devices that are contractually tied into AT&T service.

Good point, pea. I don't have any problem with Verizon or LG telling me what I can't do with my phone. Mostly because from my perspective I'm just using it as a phone. It's already such a limited device by its design that I don't care about any other arbitrary rules that an online store (which I haven't used nor have any interest in using) would impose upon me. But with more advanced devices that act more like handheld computers than "just a phone" I am more offended by shenanigans of companies trying to limit additional uses via available applications. It's the same offense I'd feel if Apple tried to tell MacBook users what internet they could use and what they could download and run on their computers. Now that phones are running around on the internet I don't think anyone should have that level of control over them.

It may not surprise you to learn that I also have a beef with provider locked phones.

My current phone is a CDMA dumb phone that was fully subsidized with minutes when I bought it about a million years ago, so that's not a real life issue I am dealing with myself.

However, I do take issue with provider locking phones in general. First, it plays into the concept that you can buy something and not really own it, which is just a loathsome and fairly recent concept. Second, it doesn't make sense from any angle except planned obsolescence and collusion.

Providers sell you subsidized phones when you sign up for a contract with them, or when you buy sufficient minutes on a contract free phone. That's where they get their money, and that's guaranteed whether you use the phone on their service or not. What does AT&T care if I buy a phone from there, with a contract, and then use that phone on a different provider? I'm still agreeing to pay them whatever I've agreed to pay them.

Provider locks do only two things that I can see:

They guarantee that, if I switch services, I have to buy a new phone, either from that provider or from a third party, whether I need or want one or not. It doesn't actually make any more money from the provider who sold me that phone.

In the case of high demand phones like the iPhone, an exclusive contract brings extra business to the provider. But in that case, it's not the provider lock, anyway. If they'll only sell a phone with a contract, and they only sell contracts with that provider, again, it shouldn't really be necessary to lock the phone.

(There have been reports, BTW, that AT&T has provider locked phones when you use it on their network, even if you bought it elsewhere. I don't know if it's true, but I do know that they're jerks, so I find it credible.)

Yah, what Pea said.

Also, I don't really give a shit if Apple wants to selectively censor shit in their app store. It's their store, it runs on their hardware, and they pay the support staff for it. It does piss me off that they believe they have the right to prevent me from tinkering with my phone so as to get software from somewhere other than their app store. I don't even want to jailbreak my damn phone, it just pisses me off that they believe they have the right to sue me if I do. This whole insidious anti-consumer notion that buying something doesn't really mean buying something any more leads nowhere good.

Hello, I am here to break your heart.

Case pending in LaGrange dog shooting

The video is not graphically gory or anything, but it's horrifying all the same.

That poor dog threw every calming signal she could at those pigs. She was already restrained, after allowing strangers to chain her up, but she was afraid and trying to run away from the cops jabbing at her aggressively with a catch pole, which there was no reason for.

She sat down, she averted her gaze, she laid down, lowered her ears, turned away, and she even wagged her tail after she'd been shot once; and those doughy, witless little fucks shot her again.

They could have walked up to her, pet her on the head, and led her away if they hadn't been such cruel, incompetent little twits.

Go fuck yourselves, assholes. Anyone who'd drop a patient over something like that is bound to be such a shitty therapist that gay patients would be better off without them, but I'm worried that if this goes through, some people won't be able to find therapists at all.

In this video they did walk up and pet Cammi on the head and lead her away. I don't know what fucking incompetence happened between 3:40 and 3:43 but Cammi is no longer connected to the catch pole. Fucking cops stand around like morons when even a child would know to get down to the dog's level and encourage it to walk up to you. That "vicious animal" definitely wasn't displaying any of the typical traits of even a distressed (scared and aggressive) animal. And why the fuck was the police doing this? Where was animal control; people who, allegedly, might have a better chance at understanding canine signals and who possibly might not have let the dog off the leash in the first fucking place.

Holy shit. Now that I've finished the video I don't understand how there's not some kind of riot happening. At the point Cammi was shot she wasn't doing anything any more dangerous than laying down. There may have been some room if she was flailing about but there's not even that out for that fucking pig.

I stopped watching this @ 6:46. I really couldn't bring myself to see that sweet puppy's fate.
Those country bumpkins with badges were a couple of twisted shitheads.
They were looking for an excuse to shoot her pure and simple.
It never ceases to amaze me when I see how many mean spirited idiots they hire to 'protect and serve'.
It's definitely a combination of incompetence, apparent boredom, and pure cruelty.

Barney Fife really is out there guys and in real life he actually has bullets in his gun.

I didn't even try to watch it. I'm so animal-sensitive, it broke my heart to see Hitler's dog killed with a cyanide capsule in Downfall.

Conventional wisdom holds that serial killers of humans start out by harming animals. I wonder what this says about these members of the police force?

I did watch it and I really dont understand why they shot the dog. The dog seemed friendly and was not bothering any one I mean they were petting it. When they got the stick out the dog got scared and ran from them. If they had just coxed it in the truck it would have been fine.
I have noticed unfortunately that police officers can be very trigger happy around dogs

A special two minutes hate should also be reserved for idiots who turn on their blinders whenever discussions of structural flaws in our government come up. This idiot, discussing the issue just raised in this thread, is a perfect example (I've linked to an html version of the thread hosted offsite because it's in a private forum). The bullshit here also irked me to no end (the truly atrocious shit starts on the end of page three and I completely flew off the handle in response to it). This thread is another, somewhat less severe example - at least these people aren't resorting to logical fallacies at such an extreme rate as in the previous two examples.

If someone seems to be completely ignoring what you say in favor of busily be constructing silly, over the top, irrational strawmen, you can be pretty sure that it really is just simple projection. They cannot fathom someone having a nuanced, well-reasoned opinion or perspective because they have never had one themselves.

I'm far too lazy to type up more write-ups of police brutality when it's already been done for me on another board (login required for view, although it'll also be visible when I update the thread I linked to above to its most recent incarnation). Just be warned: There be links to Reason within. Fortunately as long as they stay away from economic issues they actually come pretty close to living up to their name.

Again, there is never any accountability for this abuse (one of the dogs in the first article was chained and quite calm before the cop started bothering it). There's not even any training at most police departments to deal with dogs, whereas the US Postal Service, for instance, has annual dog training.

There are definitely some very good cops. The problem is mob mentality overrides any sense of justice when it's the police officers who do something wrong. This story illustrates that point very clearly. One cop started questioning why another cop was pulled over and tested positive for a BAC above the legal limit... but wasn't cited for it. Take a wild smurfing guess which officer was investigated and fired.

City pays $200k due to a 2007 police shooting. The circumstances in this are just mind-boggling. The home owner comes out to confront what he thinks are drug dealers on his front lawn. They are in fact undercover cops posing as drug dealers who were, if I remember correctly, using his property to plan a deal. The cops killed him, and an eyewitness said the cops shot before the man (did I mention he was 80-years-old?) even pulled his gun. Oh yeah, one of the cops involved has been since fired for being part of a scam.

Atlanta is an especially notorious place ever since the Kathryn Johnston murder (where police shot and killed a 92-year-old woman in a botched drug raid and tried to cover it up). The city is now going to pay $20,000 to a 62-year-old woman who was told to move from the sidewalk where she and her friend were talking about a funeral, and then was arrested for asking the inexcusable question of "why?" Of course the department concedes to no wrong-doing, and even emphasizes that the cop acted just fine. This quote is just amazing:

Quote:
"Those [national] guidelines are based on a set of proven standards that take into account the difficult situations police officers face every day, and the split-second decisions they must make to protect citizens and reduce their own personal risk,” APD public affairs director Carlos Campos said in an e-mail.
Which just obviously relates to walking up to two old ladies talking calmly in a sidewalk. Obviously a split-second decision had to be made!

I've destroyed a half-dozen nuts, and my 'wrench' on my Chevy trying to get the bloody wheels off. (Just did my front brake disks, most pleased with myself). I think Big O Tyres have their airguns set for way too high.

Took it to Big O, asked them to please take the nuts off, and to replace the 'circleified' nuts with new ones I had in a bag on the driver's seat.

Well, they took 'em off, and promptly put them right back on again. Thanks a lot. Fortunately, I'm not stuck at the side of the road trying to change a flat. PSA: When you get your car back from service, make sure you can loosen the nuts before going on a drive.

Waiting for a delivery at the Chevy dealer.
