Default Ultimate Cagefight MMXX: Non-Presidential Edition

Welcome to your one-stop shop for stories regarding shenanigans, chicanery and shittery in political races for positions other than the Dem nominee for POTUS!

Today's story involves some potentially epic ratfucking in the race to determine which Dem gets to run for state rep for Texas House District 142. The long-time incumbent is a Democrat named Harold Dutton. Texas uses a runoff system under which a candidate must get at least 50% +1 of the vote to win. If none of the candidates gets there, the top two vote-getters must participate in a runoff election.

Dutton finished first in the Dem primary, but only got 45% of the vote. He'll be in a runoff election against Houston city council member Jerry Davis, who finished second with 25%.

The potential ratfucking involves third place finisher Natasha Ruiz, who got 20% of the vote. Turns out Ms. Ruiz did absolutely no campaigning, and may well not even exist.

Between this and clusterfuckery resulting from the totally, completely, 100% non-racist voting location closures, Texas is truly covering itself in glory this week.

National race for POTUS. Senator Warren has a plan for that. Universal mail in for registered voters.

As you're probably aware -

Quote:
In recent days, Wisconsin has been thrown into political chaos, with the state’s Democratic governor pushing to delay Tuesday’s election amid rising cases of the coronavirus, and Republican leaders in the legislature refusing to either postpone voting or mail a ballot to every registered voter. On Monday, the state Supreme Court blocked a late executive order from Wisconsin’s governor that would have delayed the election, and the US Supreme Court, in a 5 to 4 decision, overturned a lower court order that would have extended absentee balloting. As a result, thousands of voters could be disenfranchised and the others left in a perplexing and potentially dangerous mess.
As long as this virus is lurking about, it seems it might play to republican advantage to force elections to proceed on schedule. I'd elaborate but too lazy to think that hard. Sorreh.

Quote:
Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) wants to make sure such a scenario never happens again. Today, Warren is releasing a new plan—shared in advance exclusively with Mother Jones—that calls for a series of provisions in Congress’ next coronavirus recovery package that would protect voters’ ability to safely cast a ballot during the pandemic. The proposals would require states to mail a ballot to every registered voter with a prepaid return envelope, as is standing practice in states like Oregon and Washington; outline $4 billion in federal funding to help states transition to universal vote-by-mail before November (10 times what Congress allocated in its first recovery package); and say states should refrain from removing voters from registration rolls unless they can prove the person has moved or died since it will be very difficult for anyone removed to reregister during the outbreak.
I couldn't agree more. This would go a long way toward reducing disenfranchisement. If Dump wants any more rescue packages, this should be a non-negotiable demand to get a bill through the house. It's probably something that should happen anyway, virus or no virus. The time to do it is when you have the leverage, if you don't control the senate.

The Wisconsin GOP refused to make more mail voting accommodations, the governor tried to delay, but the US Supreme Court conservatives ruled that they had to carry out the election despite the risks of transmitting COVID-19, despite cancelling Supreme Court oral arguments to protect themselves.

But the Democrats won the WI Supreme Court seat anyway.

Oh and every Republican on the WI Supreme Court, who also ruled against delaying the election, voted absentee :chin:

And the GOP Assembly Speaker appeared like this to tell people it was totally safe to go out and vote:

Nothing screams confidence that it's safe to go outside like that getup (even though it's not even a good one - he should be more concerned with covering his eyes than his torso).

In the end, the fact that there was a competitive/open Democratic presidential primary was probably a much bigger factor than any of the GOP's voter suppression efforts.

Bernie Sanders choosing to stay in until right after Wisconsin might have made the difference (I suspect that anger over the WIGOP's tactics may have also played a role). The final margin was 10 pts, which might be too large for that to explain it alone, but there were also other judges and local elections on the ballot, and it probably did make the difference in at least some of them.

I would guess that Biden and Sanders might have even agreed beforehand that staying in past Wisconsin was the right move. Either way, you can tell that's what Sanders was doing because he dropped out before the results came out, so he clearly wasn't hoping for WI to change his fortunes. So for that I have to give him props.

Do we have a thrad yet for the presidential cagefight, Nov 2020?

I have a prediction: the difference between the popular vote counts for Biden and for Trump (assuming those two old white/orange men are still alive and nominated by then) will be smaller than the total excess US deaths this year, possibly even than the deaths directly attributed to covid-19. And that this will cause much arguing and tension, which will lead to a strengthening of democracy, healthcare and governance in the USA further entrenchment of distortions of power.

No shenanigans, chicanery or shittery here; it's just the Alabama Dems visiting one old fashioned, down home, country style verbal beatdown after another upon Tommy Tuberville.
