Default Mars Rover Curiosity

Science Faction. I posted this vid in Miscellany, but this is scarcely trivial. Here is a catch all thread for this particular Mars Rover. Maybe we can compile a half-assed running commentary on this little episode of interplanetary exploration.

I love how the scientists that work(ed) with the existing Rovers anthropomorphize them. I am excited about the new one, too :)

Seems like a complex way of landing - lowered by a lanyard from a hovering rocket. Lots that could go wrong there, but let's hope for the best! :crossed:

How is it powered? No solar panels that I could see and the drill and laser would take a fair bit of energy to run, not to mention interplanetary communication.

One of the missions (not widely advertised) of the Curiosity Rover is to look for signs of life on Mars. Specifically, it has been tasked with confirming or disconfirming the existence of Martian Cats. If it finds any cats, Curiosity will kill them. Fact.

Radioisotope thermoelectric generator fueled with plutonium.

Why you so mad? I said thank you.

BTW, Martian Cats, if any such creatures exist, are adapted to breathing the atmosphere of Mars. Fact. Duh!

Yup. Also, there are plans for a nuclear waste disposal site on the moon. That way it will be in everyone's back yard.

Mars Science Laboratory (Curiosity Rover) Mission Animation - YouTube
Srs question: what happens to all the bits jettisoned from around the actual Rover itself?
  • Launch vehicle - presumably already burnt up in Earth's atmosphere
  • Cruise stage (disc with solar panels, detaches at 1:00 in video) - will this burn up in Mars's atmosphere?
  • Heat shield (2:01) - by definition, this detaches too low to burn up so presumably lands on the surface of Mars
  • Backshell (and parachute) (2:12) - ditto
  • Descent stage (rocket powered lander) (3:15) - ditto
  • Plus a number of little mass jettisons at various altitudes

I think Ensign Steve as the First Voter on Mars™ (in 30 years' time) should start the "Keep Mars Clean" campaign before it gets any worse.

Might I suggest the US government, responsible for most of the mess so far, would be negatively influenced by that?

I can see ES chanting it though.

I've been trying to understand how fast the cruising speed is but I'm confused. I've read that it travels about 5k mph, but also that it's going to traverse 362 million miles in 8.5 months.
