My very lay person understanding is that with Hawaiian words, when you have a double-vowel, you pronounce each vowel. So, yeah, one would have to pronounce a ' stop between the pairs of O's in Napoopoo to break up the sound.

Even in the word Hawaii (Hawai'i), both I's are pronounced, though the first I gets mushed into the AI diphthong. So it's Hawai-ee, as opposed to Hawah-ee. Meanwhile Kauai is just Kauai, not Kauai-ee like I hear a lot. When in doubt, sound it out people!

My other favorite example is the town of Kaaawa (Ka'a'awa), where each A is pronounced seprately, like Kah-ah-awa.

A long vowel doesn't have to be broken by a glottal stop. But it's indicated by a macron, so it's usually the case that multiples of the same vowel were intended to be split by an ʻokina.

For example, a type of lava flow is called ʻaʻā, with the second vowel long (the Hawaiian pronunciation would be something like uh-oh, but uh-AAH). But you may see it written as simply "aa" in English text (and "aa" is a legal word in games like Scrabble).

For other vowel sequences you can't predict whether there should be a glottal stop, however. So... Kauai is actually Kauaʻi, so the final "i" is actually pronounced separately... However, there is no [ai] diphthong, as they are separated by the glottal stop. So it's kawa-'ee

The glottal stop is a full separate consonant, and treated as a letter in Hawaiian spelling so it can appear between any vowels, or even at the beginning of a word.

The actual origin of that sound is the earlier Polynesian /k/ (so, in Maori there is a word Hawaiki, for example). While what is currently written as 'k' in Hawaiian used to be /t/ - and in fact, can still be pronounced as [t] in free variation (there's also a dialect of Hawaiian where it is usually pronounced as [t]). There are pretty clear correspondences with other Polynesian languages with those and other sounds.

Sweden and Norway get all the good thunderstorms. Bunch of Thor's boot-lickers, the lot of them.

They did the solar eclipse tourism the last time there was one in Europe. It wasn't a total eclipse here then, but further to the south.

Germany is not too bad, mostly. Except the Ruhr area and some big urban pockets. Huh.

England, Belgium and the Netherlands of course are the worst.

I'm surprised at how much more widespread the bright areas are in NL compared to southeast England.

That's what we call the Randstad. Especially around The Hague/Rotterdam it's bright.

I was also wondering what's going on in North Dakota. Is it on fire? :freakout:

The oil platforms in the North Sea create quite a lot of light.

Is that where the notorious pipeline is? The shale drilling operations?

I think most of it corresponds to population density within a country. Wealthier countries have a higher brightness in general because even very rural places have electricity, while poorer countries don't have the same level of infrastructure.

But based on what's going on in Alberta, North Dakota, Alaska, the Gulf of Mexico and western Texas/southeast NM, it would appear that fossil fuel extraction also generates a lot of brightness.

That would also explain some of the brighness in Saudi Arabia and the other Gulf countries. And Nigeria and Venezuela.

The worksites are lit like the day and run 24 hours. Refineries are well lit too. Looking at Fort McMurray and area, I didn't know it was quite that dramatic, but the more you know.

So I started googling Maine on Google maps to remember how the placement and zoomed out a bit and looked at all the French names and then over to New Brunswick, the same, and Gaspe and zoomed out moor to see what cities were visible at far zoom and there was Inuvik and I zoomed closer in and ended up learning about an Inuit circus troop in Igloolik founded by a Cirque du Soleil guy.
