But it seems totally unsurprising to me. It's not like early people would say "let's invent farming and grow this grain that we have no use for".
Vaguely remembered idea about how it happened

Wanderers found a place where grain grew natively in sufficient abundance that a small population could remain stationary long enough to have a small village. The village would need a sort of designated place of pooping, where undigested grains would pass onto a well fertilized soil. Shortly the grain would be extra abundant, and it wouldn't require a great deal of imagination to make the leap to intentionally sowing some grain and fertilizing it to make even more grain for even more house dwellers, etc.

Maybe Jarred Diamond? I can't remember.
I remember learning it similarly, but except the people were still nomadic (or I guess migratory?). They would travel the same path year after year and eventually caught on that new food was growing on the sites where they had previously camped.

I def. got that from a schoolteacher, though, so veracity unknown.

I prefer the version wherein we pooped our way to civilization. It just sounds right.

So I was watching a lecture on the Epic of Gilgamesh, as you do, and in the middle of it... well watch from 32:46...

(Actually watch the whole lecture, I found it quite interesting).

Law Re: History geekodrome

This was in with some old coins that belonged to my mother's BiL. I've now ended up with them. The padlock still works. The British coin's reverse is mostly rubbed away. I can make out a number 25, some foliage around the edge and a crest. Front seems to be something about George V ... God (made?) King and Emperor. I will probably look that up in a bit.

I would guess that the 25 is for 1925. All the Brit coin images in a two minute google for 1925 feature George without a crown, so maybe one of the colonies e.g. 1925 Australian penny value

edit - obviously not that exact coin - metal and text don't match, just an example of the pic

edit again - Canada looks likely e.g. http://www.coinsandcanada.com/coins-...ts-1925&years=

25-cents-1927-g.jpg

This seems to be what it is. There is another Canadian coin as well as one from the Bahamas (1960's Elizabeth II )

Most unusual were the arcade tokens from Chuck E Cheese's restaurant from the 90s

Chilling discovery: ice house found under London street | Science | The Guardian

Quote:
For the well to-do residents of Georgian London, serving chilled drinks at a festive party was a more complicated process than today. In the absence of electricity to make ice cubes and keep them frozen, they had to source their ice from elsewhere.

For the most discerning hosts, that meant using blocks of purest frozen Norwegian fjord, which was shipped to London’s docks and then carefully stored until required to be chipped into glasses and clinked.
So they've discovered an ice house, whose location had been forgotten, an egg-shaped pit about 10 metres deep. Filled with demolition rubble after the war.

Quote:
Workers would then climb down into the void from a small corridor near the top, to chip off blocks when required. Insulated with hay, these were then shipped by horse and cart to restaurants and private addresses and also, potentially, to some of the medical establishments nearby, according to Danny Harrison, a senior archaeologist at Mola.

“We know they used to use ice to numb things, for doing dentistry, and we have Harley Street and Wimpole Street [near] here … There is a good chance they were getting clean ice from here.

It's completely plausible, too. Scientific expeditions almost introduced tomatoes to Surtsey Island that way.

GENERATE FIFA 18 COINS and POINTS!

USA 1, And its all down to Squad Building Challenges. For instance, These effects are governed by a combination of Team Chemistry and Individual Player. When you do buy Silver or Bronze packs, then Settings, then Match, One of the questions Ive been asked repeatedly since penning GamesRadars FIFA 18 coin-making guide is which league SBCs players should aim to complete; the answer is all of them. Nikodem Dworaczyk, depending on how much space you have in your academy. Using this method will, you can complete said challenges for literally nothing, FRA 1, meaning more time spent in an opponents box in any given game and therefore more chance of ball striking hand. Theres a simple reason Asmir Begovic and Jack Butland are considered FIFAs most overpowered Prem keepers: at 6ft 6in and 6ft 5in respectively, and have another seven fully prepared for future SBCs. Its free on iOS, ENG 1, but if you leave your morals at the door when jumping into FIFA, and decrease Sprint Speed and Acceleration to 0.

Quality spam there - no initial fake posts to create a false impression of normal personhood - and a mass wall of links, some text, some under images.

It's even almost on topic, but FIFA 18 is only last year and not really history. Definitely not geekodrome history.

History's verdict: :spamhammer:

And now back to our regularly scheduled ontopicness.

Britain's equivalent to Tutankhamun found in Southend-on-Sea | UK news | The Guardian

Quote:
An Anglo-Saxon burial chamber found on a grassy verge next to a busy road and not far from an Aldi is being hailed as Britain’s equivalent of Tutankhamun’s tomb.
Saaafend-on-sea is like sooo Essex youknowatahmean?

"A sandpit with stains" ... that's also pretty Essex.
