Lolorado choo-choo
Hey, guess what! bey and I are on vacation, and we are leaving for a long train trip tomorrow. We're taking the California Zephyr from Oakland to Denver.
Neither of us has taken a train trip longer than a few hours, but this time our journey is 33 hours, one-way. We're breaking it up, though, and flying home, because 33 hours? Jeebus. "Ring-ring! Hello, airplanes? It's trains. You win!"
We have a sleeper car for the first 22 hours, then we're getting off near Moab to spend 2 days with my mom. After that, we have just a little babby day-trip, 10 hours in coach the rest of the way to Denver.
I AM EXCITE
I kind of sort of don't know what to expect. I read all over the Amtrak website about the amenities and such, but I know it's not the same as being there. vm, others who have taken long train trips, what should we expect? What surprised you? Anything you wished you'd known ahead of time?
My friend at work said we should watch Murder on the Orient Express before we go, which, DERP! What a great idea, I'm glad someone thought of it. So we watched that yesterday (the 1974 version), and we also watched the Casa Bonita episode of South Park, because of course we are going to try and get to Casa Bonita while we are there.
We actually have tons of fun and exciting stuff planned, but I don't want to get too into it and jinx it, so I'll give the full trip report when we get back.

Re: Lolorado choo-choo
It has been such a long time since I took a long train trip that I'm not sure I have any actual advice.
Banff to Vancouver was the closest to your forthcoming adventure, though only about half the distance. But that was like 100 years ago.
It being the 21st century, will you have power at your seats?
May it be daytime for the most scenic bits.

Yes! And also WiFi.

I suspect the most scenic bits will be on the second leg, UT to CO (or at least the bits I haven’t already driven through), and that’s all daylight, so yay!

Once, before you worked at Google of course, I took a train with onboard wifi from King's Cross London to somewhere possibly Lincoln. Google Maps and Ingress™ were adamant that I was still in King's Cross even though I could see buildings flashing past and other stations ... until I turned off wifi on my phone.

In Europe you ride on the inside of the train, and in Mericuh you look at it from the outside?

I think he's suggesting train travel in Europe is highly refined and extra posh, while in Mericuh, we're still saddled with Olde Weste Style Steame Locomotives.

I wish.
That is the Western Maryland 734, which was restored in the early 90s, where it was used exclusively for short scenic tours until a few years ago, when it was re-retired.
The Zephyr uses Superliner cars I think exclusively.

Take some goggles, fights on the top of trains aren't as glamorous as Hollywood suggests.
This is your conductor speaking, as we leave California the unhip squares cabin light will be turned on, please refrain from smoking your joints while the unhip squares light is illuminated. ...We have just crossed into Colorado, your conductor has turned off the unhip squares light, it's now safe to spark a doobie.

I think you can bring your own booze. And you should because train stuff is expensive and I like booze

She keeps giving them my shoes! I can't find my left Birkenstock anywhere.
ES and bey went for a walk, so I'm guessing they maybe took it with them.

It's a little disquieting that those dogs invariably love our guests so much more than they love us - to the point of giving away our tangible personal property - but hey, in the dogs' defense, we get some extraordinarily high-quality guests.

Re: Lolorado choo-choo
A full trip report is still forthcoming, it's just that I'm still on vacation at home and I haven’t felt like messing around with the pictures. (There will be none of that "I need a vacation after my vacation" nonsense from me. I know what the fuck I'm doing.)
Highlights tho...
Train ride to Moab was great. We spent the next 2 days getting the personalized Ranger Mommy tours of Arches, Canyonlands, and the night sky. So much hiking. So many pictures.
Then we trained the rest of the way to Colorado, got fed and put up by pea and Matlock and the girls. They are excellent hosts, what with delicious food and conversation with the grown-ups, and all the Birkenstocks we could eat from the babies. They (the grown-ups) took us to a concert where I could have speaker-humped dude's monitor, I was that close to the stage. Too fun.
Sunday was Dodgers @ Rockies with huntress +1 (surprise!), and Dodgers won, so, yay! We stayed Sunday night at the Dino hotel, spent most of Monday at the pool, and then flew home.
Couple days of rest, Magic the Gathering this evening, then at midnight we’re gonna drop some shrooms and binge the new season of BoJack.

I'm honored, of course, but I haven't had that much hair since I was 25.
