I will say it has nothing to do with hats. It is much more basic than that.
I will admit that I kinda threw the hats in the original koans for fun. You know, the whole running gag of me asking "Are they wearing a hat?" in smilie based games? But that is just misdirection, the koan has nothing to do with that.
I kinda didn't want to give any clues with so many players frozen and unable to guess. So I think I will suspend that from this post onwards for round Four. Because yeah, I made it much harder than I intended, I guess.

I just realized my hypothesis doesn't fit all of the koans with Buddha nature. Back to square one.
ETA: Or maybe it does? Depends on how you look at some of them.
ETA2: Naw.

Okay, this is wrong and I know it's wrong, but we're stuck if we don't do something, so maybe I can dislodge my circular thinking by getting a koan that contradicts it.
A koan has the Buddha nature if an equal number of smileys face left as face right.

I am sorry but that is not the Buddha nature.
has the Buddha nature.
Round The Fourth.
Koans with the Buddha nature
Null
Koans without the Buddha nature
Also, since this round has been such a bugger, I am suspending the limit on guesses so it can get answered. So ask/offer away.
