Lightning Bolt Our Lady of the Underpass is no more (new thread)

Just not to be swamped by the old thread. To start off, click the link and follow links.

Link to SC latest thread on this subject.

Link includes link to slideshow and original radio report.

Defaced with graffiti, erased by the Illinois Department of Transportation.

Additional comment:
What's with some people? This has no official church sanction. Folks rubbing it and kissing their fingers. One of the pics in the slide shows a woman looking cult-zonked doing the rosary.

Get this: Not only is there a God. He has a mother who is big on practical jokes.

I don't get it. There's already a long recent thread on the subject, so start a new one? :?

It certainly appears to be idol worship.

I suppose it would be fruitless for me to post biblical verses regarding such worship because, as an atheist, I am slathered in "out of context" oil.

I thought you looked a bit lubricated.

Yeah, that idol stuff. I'll never understand it. I'm more into idle. Or idyll.

People have note the low theads-to-smilies ratio. The board needs more threads.

Why a new thread? No better reason than I did not notice the first.

I have been away the past week due to computer problems, but I am back.

Latest per WLS radio: They are still at it teddy bears and all.

This isn't religion in the conventional sense, but it gives some idea how religion got started.

I read here that visitation is actually petering out.

from the article ~

"More than 50 unlit votive candles stood at the foot of the stain a little before noon Wednesday, along with half a dozen family photographs, a modest floral bouquet and rosary beads strung onto a free-standing white wooden cross. Only one visitor was present when I arrived--down from nine when I'd swung by during the middle of the day at the end of April, down from throngs estimated at more than 100 in the first mad days when the national media descended." Eric Zorn May 12, 2005

Down the memory hole...

How's that?

I see it more as a specific, if ideosyncratic, expression of a religion (or to be accurate, an image associated with that religious expression) which already existed. It gives some idea how idolatry manifests, but genesis...nah, I don't see it.

Perhaps you could explain?

I think attaching some supernatural explanation to a natural event is what Abdul was talking about.

Religion? People want it and will have it. Teddy bears for a crack in a wall.

I went there yesterday. Plenty of folks are taking this seriously.

Unnerving. Lotsa kneeling with rosaries. Touching it and kissing their hands.

The Catholic Church, which is a big deal here in Chicago, has said nothing.

Sheesh!

Maybe they don't consider them "True Catholics".
