Re: Miscellany
An interesting take on image search, Same Energy.
It's an AI project.
Quote:
Same Energy is a visual search engine. You can use it to find beautiful art, photography, decoration ideas, or anything else.
We believe that image search should be visual, using only a minimum of words. And we believe it should integrate a rich visual understanding, capturing the artistic style and overall mood of an image, not just the objects in it.

Hearsay from someone who just talked to her gynaecologist: if you’re due for a mammogram get it done prior to your vaccination or six weeks after due to lymph node reactions that can confuse the mammogram.

Mrs. S and I know of blackcurrants and Ribena only because, more than three decades ago, now, we spent two years in Hong Kong.

As soon as saw "Ribes", I thought of Ribena. We used to have that at home when I was growing up, which makes sense now because my family emigrated from HK. Also, now I know why I haven't seen it anywhere in years.

Re: Miscellany
Why do French speakers end sentences in English with 'or so'?
I assume it's a rough translation of some idiom, but I've never noticed any French idiom like that.

Re: Miscellany
Is that France French? I'm in contact with Quebecois almost every day and haven't seen that.
There's a CBC comedy trope where the Quebec guy will end sentences in "Le" (the) like it's a spoken ellipsis. Maybe something like that, asking for your confirmation, or a version of a CB call 'Over' (your turn to speak.)

Re: Miscellany
I don't think I've heard any Quebecois do that, but I can't say they don't. It mostly seems to be France French, except I know an African who does it too.
When I've heard it, it seems to mean more like 'etcetera' or 'and things like that' or I used to know this hesher kid a million years ago who ended sentences with, 'and shit.' (Predictably enough that sometimes five or six other people would say it in unison with him.)

Re: Miscellany
I'm dealing with lots of France French talking in English as best they can and I've never noticed this.
I have to conclude it's just people trying to wind you up, pea, or so.

Re: Miscellany
I sometimes trail off with "so..." It's sorta like I was going to explain further or ask a question but then didn't feel the need, except it's become some sort of unconscious affect.
Don't meet many French speakers, though, so...

Re: Miscellany
Now I'm going to have to try to figure out if that's actually what they say, or if I'm mishearing it. Or maybe it's "Ah so," like French people making fun of Japanese or something.

I'm not sure the point of lecturing the Lynx. If it's like any other cat, it's going to kill your chickens out of spite now.
The cat is giving that guy some serious "fuck you!" stares.
