Ya know, I wouldn't be surprised if some not insignificant percentage of Mississippi non-Republicans think the same thing.

If there are Alabama non-Republicans there have to be a few in Mississippi. One or two at least.

Most Mississippi non-Republicans are black.

Mississippi has the most racially divided electorate - nearly all white Mississippians (generally somewhere between 75-90%) vote for Republicans and about 70% are registered as Republicans (2008 exit polls suggest that MS white independents are basically Republicans anyway, since 82% of them voted for McCain), and of course the blacks vote overwhelmingly for Democrats.

Mississippi needs some kind of, like, outside intervention.

It is clear to me that those who would like to see interracial marriage made illegal hold that position because they want to promote interracial marriage. We all know that making something illegal (Prohibition) makes it a more attractive option. Forbidden fruit is always sweeter. So, if you want to promote interracial marriage, make it illegal.

No, no, no. Iraqi Pottery Barn rules apply. You either have to clean it up once you take responsibility for the Mississippi, or else you have to invade West Virginia as an exit strategy (whereby you may now ignore Mississippi) in your ongoing War on Poverty and Ignorance(TM).

This is similar to people occasionally mentioning to me the solution to the immigration problem or other ills factually or fictionally related to Mexico is for the US to invade Mexico. The problem* being: then you have Mexico.

*Actually one of many problems, starting with civil and human rights, sovereignty, warmongering, crimes against humanity, etc.

By now you've probably already heard about the name of Perry's hunting camp. So here's an interesting analysis: who is getting flack for this on the Right? Why, Herman Cain of course.

Quote:
You might have anticipated that Perry would face a firestorm for being associated with the property, but it's Cain whose remarks are drawing the most criticism from the right. At RedState, Erick Erickson concluded, "It also seems to be a slander Herman Cain is picking up and running with as a way to get into second place." Glenn Reynolds remarked that until now, Cain's "big appeal is that he's not just another black race-card-playing politician." Over at the Daily Caller, Matt Lewis called Cain's remarks "a cheap shot, and, perhaps a signal that Cain is willing to play the race card against a fellow Republican when it benefits him."

The key phrase here is "fellow Republican." Because, you see, no one thought Cain was "playing the race card" when he said in the same program that black people are "brainwashed" into voting for Democrats and suggested that black people who vote Republican are "thinking for themselves." Cain wasn't rebuked by conservatives when he previously suggested President Barack Obama was not "a strong black man," implied liberals were out to commit genocide against blacks through support for abortion rights, and said he wouldn't appoint a Muslim to his cabinet.
But at no time let it be said that the Right is racist. It's just that when your hunting camp had a racial epithet in its name well into the 1980's, and possibly 90's- well then a certain someone had better not say that such was insensitive. Shame on you, Mr. Cain, for such harsh words!

Quote:
Cain just ran head first into the brick wall of conservative anti-anti-racism, the attitude on the right that accusations of racism directed at white people are of far greater consequence than any lingering vestiges of institutional racism nonwhites might face.

I think the other money quote from that analysis is this:

Quote:
Not just because Cain is attacking a fellow Republican, but because he stepped out of the proper role of a black conservative, which is to reassure Republicans that their political problems with race are the inventions of a liberal conspiracy

Are we talking about Mitt Romney (referring to the fact that Black people were banned from ordination and taking part in LDS temple ceremonies until 1978) or Mike Huckabee (referring to the fact that the Southern Baptist Church split with the northern Baptists over the issue of supporting chattel slavery)?

Just trying to keep the conversation straight.

No blacks alive today? That's clearly incorrect. No slaves alive today? Also incorrect. No black slaves alive today? Again, incorrect. No black slaves in America alive today? Incorrectamundo.

Or maybe by "none" you meant the black people who were slaves hundreds of years ago, which isn't what Scarlatti said, but hey, whatever. I'll concede that none of the black people who were slaves hundreds of years ago are still alive today. Unfortunately, that statement (if it is indeed the statement you intended to make) is as trivial and uninformative as it is accurate.

Damn right! What's a little rape and being deemed a chattel compared to the privileges of swabbing out Massa's chamber pot and not having to mix with the field slaves until after dark, when Massa puts you out of the house along with the cat?

Oh wait! Technically, the chattel thing means there was no rape! After all, can you rape a workbench? Why no, no you can't!

In any event, the most touching episode of the era occurred when the wealthy defended the honor and privileges of their house slaves by forming their own country, stealing a bunch of shit, and making the poor white folk go to war when the aggrieved parties came to take their shit back. Good times.
