Germany Sets New Record, Generating 74 Percent Of Power Needs From Renewable Energy | ThinkProgress

Quote:
On Sunday, Germany’s impressive streak of renewable energy milestones continued, with renewable energy generation surging to a record portion — nearly 75 percent — of the country’s overall electricity demand by midday. With wind and solar in particular filling such a huge portion of the country’s power demand, electricity prices actually dipped into the negative for much of the afternoon, according to Renewables International.
Doesn't get cheaper than getting paid to use power.

I follow Cleantech News — Solar, Wind, EV News (#1 Source) | CleanTechnica, and there's almost too much to post on.

Wind energy, solar energy, electric cars, ...

Like New Report Confirms Renewable Power Costs Less than fossil fuels. Some forms, like onshore wind and hydroelectric. Photovoltaic cells are getting there, however.

Still not much on synfuels and biofuels for cars and airplanes and other vehicles.

Fossil fuels have taken a nose dive in prices since they gathered the data for that, even natural gas has dropped 25% or so.

Natural Gas Price: Latest Price & Chart for Natural Gas - NASDAQ.com is a good place to go. You can find other commodity prices there, like for crude oil. Brent crude oil is a nice variety of it for refining into gasoline and the like.

The whims of buyers and sellers make prices fluctuate like crazy, something like one can see for a lot of other things traded at NASDAQ and other such places.

Portland is now using hydroelectric turbines in its main water pipeline, whose water pressure it is using to generate electricity. They work where water is flowing downhill and have already begin to recoup some of the cost for keeping the water system running. The piping system also has systems in place to detect changes in water pressure in order to prevent pipes from bursting, as well as whether drinking water is contaminated.

Costa Rica is now running completely on renewable energy – Quartz

Quote:
Costa Rica is running without having to burn a single fossil fuel, and it’s been doing so for 75 straight days.

Thanks to some heavy rainfall this year, Costa Rica’s hydropower plants alone are generating nearly enough electricity to power the entire country. With a boost from geothermal, solar, and wind energy sources, the country doesn’t need an ounce of coal or petroleum to keep the lights on.

Japan Likes Solar Panel

Quote:
With nuclear power in the doldrums after the Fukushima disaster, it's solar energy that is becoming the alternative.

Solar power is set to become profitable in Japan as early as this quarter, according to the Japan Renewable Energy Foundation (JREF), freeing it from the need for government subsidies and making it the last of the G7 economies where the technology has become economically viable.
jref - lol... [ed.]

Quote:
Japan is retiring nearly 2.4 gigawatts of expensive and polluting oil-fired energy plants by March next year and switching to alternative fuels. Japan's 43 nuclear reactors have been closed in the wake of the 2011 meltdown at the Fukushima power plant after an earthquake and a tsunami - since then, renewable energy capacity has tripled to 25 gigawatts, with solar accounting for more than 80 percent of that.

The carbon tax here in the northeast is working out just fine. Contrary to what the contrarians predicted, billions of indigent people around the world did not die of famine. Mostly, it just means some buildings became more efficient, and that reduced demand which lowered prices, as per the standard theory. Some of the tax was used to help low income pay for energy, some for renewables. There really isn't much of a downside. Of course, New Jersey is missing out because dumb fuck Christie made us.

Quote:
...as a macro-economic driver, the key to RGGI’s success has been the reinvestment of money from the carbon permit auction, Okie said. So far, the states have spent 59 percent of the funds on energy efficiency; 15 percent on renewable energy projects; 13 percent on bill-payment assistance to energy consumers; 12 percent on other greenhouse gas programs and program administration; and 1 percent on clean technology research and development, the report found.
For example, investing in efficiency programs — such as weatherizing houses — reduces the amount of electricity used. But that’s not actually why bills are going down. The decrease in electricity demand actually reduces the overall price of electricity. That means the costs go down for everyone, not just someone who installed new, efficient windows.

This article gives some very good reasons to be optimistic about a less carbon intensive energy future. It has a wide scope and does not stretch credulity too greatly.

SolarCity announces the most efficient rooftop solar panels yet : TreeHugger

Quote:
Today, SolarCity revealed its newest solar panel, which the company says is the most efficient rooftop solar panel in the world. The panel hit 22.04 percent efficiency according to third-party testing. The unit is the same size as standard efficiency models, but produces 30 to 40 percent more power. According to SolarCity, the new panel can produce more electricity per square foot than any other rooftop unit on the market.
That is a very bold claim, especially in light of this...

Quote:
The company projects it will be making 9,000 to 10,000 units per day, once that facility reaches capacity, and will be able to build the new units at the same cost as standard efficiency panels thanks to a new production process. Jonathan Bass, SolarCity’s Vice President of Communications, told TreeHugger that the facility is expected to be at capacity by 2017.
Well, that is setting the bar pretty high, and will be tough to walk back if things go sideways. They're talking about a time string of only a year or two. This is one of Elon M's pet projects.

I'm agreed to take surveys for my local power company, Consumers Energy. The one they sent today asked about Solar Gardens. Instead of installing your own panels, they propose to allow people to buy panels on one of their installations. They are even considering payment plans of varying lengths. It's an intriguing idea. Not sure if I'd go for it.

That is actually something that I've wondered why it wasn't being done. The way buying green power is generally structured now is pretty amorphous, it's hard to visualize exactly what is going on in the details of generation/distribution, you just know you are paying more. I have considered how much cooler it would be if people could buy a partial interest in an actual project and then get the some sort of periodic performance report. A coop between the developer and the general public sounds really interesting to me.

7 Surprising Realities Behind the Transition to Renewable Energy | Alternet
1. Solar is now so cheap that global adoption appears unstoppable.
2. Wind power adoption is rapidly altering energy portfolios around the world.
3. National and subnational energy policies are promoting renewables, and many geographies are considering a price on carbon.
4. The financial sector is embracing renewables – and starting to turn against fossils and nuclear.
5. Coal use is in decline in the United States and will likely fall at the global level far sooner than once thought possible.
6. Transportation will move away from oil as electric vehicle fleets expand rapidly and bike- and car-sharing spreads.
7. Nuclear is on the rocks due to rising costs and widespread safety concerns.

Solar Costs Continue To Plunge Globally
Quote:
In both countries, solar is now clearly the cheapest option compared to new coal-fired power stations. In Chile, where the auction was open to all technologies, fossil fuel projects did not win a single megawatt of capacity. And the auction produced the lowest ever price for unsubsidised solar – US6.5c/kWh.

In India, US firm SunEdison won the entire 500MW of solar capacity on auction in the state of Andhra Pradesh, quoting a record low tariff for India of INR 4.63/kWh (US7.1c/kWh). Again, this was unsubsidised. And again, it beats new coal generation, particularly generation using imported coal.

...
These bids follow an auction in the US last month by the Texas city of Austin, which contracted to build 300MW of large-scale solar PV at a price of less than US4c/kWh. Even after backing out a tax credit, this is still less than US6c/kWh, and still beats gas and new coal plants, if anyone was planning to build one.
Exxon Predicted Today's Solar PV Boom Back In The '80s noting Exxon Predicted Today's Cheap Solar Boom Back in the 1980s - Bloomberg Business

From CleanTechnica:
Quote:
In the article, Peter Eisenberger, a former senior Exxon R&D director and now an environmental science professor, is said to have co-authored an internal report about the cost of solar power back in the mid-80s, after oil prices fell drastically. The conclusion of the now 25-year old report was that the authors foretold that solar would be a worthwhile investment for the company starting sometime around 2012, which happens to be right around the time when solar PV technology did actually start to become truly affordable.
From Bloomberg:
Quote:
The report predicted that utilities would embrace solar-thermal power plants, huge mirror arrays that concentrate and store heat. The economics of that technology have turned to be less favorable than those of solar panels installed on homes and businesses—or even, it turns out, in utility-scale facilities.
I myself was also surprised by that. Solar-thermal electricity generation seemed like a simpler technology than what's essentially computer-chip technology.

Also from Bloomberg,
Quote:
The oil giant continues to support research into photovoltaics, as well as biofuels and CO2 capture technologies. But as Exxon CEO Rex Tillerson told investors in May, the company isn’t investing in renewable businesses. “We choose not to lose money on purpose,” he said.
Famous last words, I'm sure.

Ironic that the UK government has just cancelled its renewable subsidies. A number of solar panel installation companies have gone into administration in response.

G R A P H E N E is some really cool stuff. For example...

Quote:
UCLA researchers have developed a new graphene based material, holey graphene, enabling production of a capacitor that has unparalleled energy density, x10 that of currently available supercapacitors. Holey graphene features superior electrical conductivity, exceptional mechanical flexibility and unique hierarchical porosity, making it ideal for use as a cathode in electro-chemical capacitors and batteries. These characteristics may give some credence to claims that a 10,000 Farad ultra-supercapacitor, smaller than a paperback book, has been produced – a major development if true and one with revolutionary potential for electric propulsion.
Now, 10,000 Farad is really quite a substantial amount of stored electrical charge. As a comparison, this large common ordinary everyday capacitor stores 20000 micro Farad, or 20/1000 of a Farad. As conventional capacitors go, it is a fairly large one, though not huge. As you can see, it's about the size of a coffee cup. The capacitor they describe in the article carries about 500,000 times that much stored electrical charge in a volume the size of a paperback. That is amazing, astounding, flabbergasting, gobsmacking etc. If the capability of this material even approaches the description in the article when actually deployed in practical application, it will be, as the article calls it, a disruptive technology. Exactly the sort of thing I have been holding my breath to see from the field of nanotech but so far been somewhat underwhelmed.

By 2030, Renewables Will Be The World's Primary Power Source | ThinkProgress

Quote:
In November, the International Energy Agency quietly dropped this bombshell projection: “Driven by continued policy support, renewables account for half of additional global generation, overtaking coal around 2030 to become the largest power source.”

I might still be around. I would be happy with that much progress. Renewables has been one of my "things" since like third grade.

Game Change: Tesla And GM Announce Affordable, Long-Range Electric Cars | ThinkProgress

It's here. The projected decreased cost of batteries resulted in the projected decreased cost of electric vehicles, as projected. Go ahead, ask your projectionist.

Quote:
GM has said that its 200-mile-range Bolt will be available by the end of 2016 for “as low as” $30,000 — a price that assumes the buyer gets the $7500 federal tax credit. So the car itself will have a sticker price of $37,500.
Quote:
As for the sticker price of Tesla’s Model 3, the company confirmed this week what CEO Elon Musk said last year, “When I say $35,000, I’m talking about without any credits.” The Model 3 will be priced at $35,000 — before federal and state tax credits are applied. The company will start taking preorders in March and is promising delivery in fall of 2017. That said, hitting delivery times has not been Tesla’s strong suit, and some analysts believe the car won’t be available until 2018.
lol, I have such a man crush on Elon. He's kind of like Galt without all the hate and libertardian baggage.

Anywho, there are lots of tasty morsels in this article, if you're into this kind of thing, so I don't want to give away everything.

It seems like it's at least possible that peak oil will follow from a maximum in peak demand, rather than be restricted by peak supply.

Re: the chart, I realize the numbers are small, but it's early in the game, it's a heck of a trend fit, and all while oil prices are incredibly low.

One of those cool chance discovery stories regarding graphene. This is from Brookhaven National Laboratory.

BNL Newsroom | Graphene Leans on Glass to Advance Electronics

This is a long article. Basically, it has to do with how to turn graphene into a practical semiconductor by doping it with other materials, which is the trick if this very promising material is to realize its theoretical potential as useful stuff. It may turn out be a workaround for the limit of photovoltaic deployment constrained by indium, which is used to dope silicon solar cells. Indium is fairly scarce and has other important uses beside being good for solar cells.

Awesome graphene batteries would be great, too.

The scientists built the proof-of-concept graphene devices on substrates made of soda-lime glass—the most common glass found in windows, bottles, and many other products. In an unexpected twist, the sodium atoms in the glass had a powerful effect on the electronic properties of the graphene.
Quote:
"The sodium inside the soda-lime glass creates high electron density in the graphene, which is essential to many processes and has been challenging to achieve," said coauthor Nanditha Dissanayake of Voxtel, Inc., but formerly of Brookhaven Lab. "We actually discovered this efficient and robust solution during the pursuit of something a bit more complex. Such surprises are part of the beauty of science."
