Re: WTF happened to Google?
Google killed off Chrome Apps. These were apps that ran in their Chrome browser but had access to things like USB ports. Okay, hardly anyone used them, but they were the standard method used to set up flight controllers for model quadcopters and planes - things like CleanFlight, BetaFlight and so on.
Apparently you can still download and run those apps if you have an actual Chromebook rather than just a Chrome browser - but you also need to know the URL as Google have removed the apps from its Chrome store.
What it means is that the guys who used to maintain and distribute those apps now have to maintain and support three different ones for Windows, Linux, and Apple - some are choosing to only support Windows, which is a pain for non Windows users.
It's just another of the long line of services introduced and then killed by Google.
One of those 'top ten services killed by Google' things - this one doesn't even mention Chrome Apps

Did you try pressing volume down + power at the same time? If not, do that and hold it there for a while to see if the fastboot menu comes up.

Re: WTF happened to Google?
I went to Google Fi last month. Seems.... OK. I got a cheaper Moto X4 because the Pixels were expensive and had less functionality (no earphone jack, no way to put in a SD card to expand memory, for example).
I hear they take pretty pictures though.

I hear tell the camera is at least as good as the 5x, which was the most outstanding phone camera I've ever behelded.

What a coincidence. I also went to Google.Fi. But that was because I was in FI.

The 5X was good, but not as good as my Samsung Galaxy S7 Active. And S8 was supposedly even better. The S9 is supposed to be phenomenal. I'll never know, I've stuck myself with using a J7, which has a camera akin to an S3.

Re: WTF happened to Google?
Speaking of google, I was watching a show on my tablet and the character said "Ok, People - let's check it out." and suddenly my google browser woke up and started googling "Let's check it out"
I was like WTF, so put the show back and watched it happen again. I guess it heard "Okay Google"
So now my netflix is talking to my browser.

I've been on the google fi for a couple years now. As far as the cell coverage, it's just okay. I do like the actual service though. For data misers like me who don't want to spend a lot of money it's p good.

Re: WTF happened to Google?
Yeah, I thought so too. Maybe they got rid of it as the motto then, but it was still in the "Code of Conduct"?
Anyways, so I've been trying to extricate myself from Google for a little while now, but was having a hard time letting go of Google News. So they helped me by launching a new redesign that doesn't let me change anything, including my incorrect location or the fact that they think that my personal interests include a lot of sports that I can barely identify. It's basically some annoying hand holding mobile app in desktop site form.

Re: WTF happened to Google?
I use DuckDuckGo for search, which I think defaults to OpenStreetMaps (I might have set that as a preference, though), and I have Offline Calendar, which, as the name suggests, stores calendar data locally.
I also sometimes use Lineage, although I've got regular Android on this phone right now. I'm also waiting for that Librem phone to come out. If it's any good, I'll probably get one of those.
I don't know of a good replacement for Earth or News. I do have a big RSS feed on Feedly, though, and I was thinking about making a news specific one for Thunderbird and seeing how that goes. Alternately, I might just read the newspapers I subscribe to like in the olden days.

Re: WTF happened to Google?
Thanks!
I have a lot of uses for online calendars for using across multiple devices and sharing with others, so local storage is non-optimal.
Earth is a big one for my work, as we work with geographic data but not in an industry that's paid anywhere near well enough for professional GIS training for what are relatively simple tasks. I use QGIS mostly, but I don't want to have to train others the ins and outs of a powerful but somewhat opaque open source interface. Ideally I would put together a vastly simplified custom interface with a handful of easy to use dialogs for common tasks, but spending time on that is nowhere near the upper end of my priority list.
I can probably live without News as it's always been a lazy option for me anyway.
