RETroactive CONtinuity: In series fiction, when a new story changes past events, either by providing new information that causes existing material to be seen in a different light OR when new material is given that overwrites existing material. Retcons usually occur when a new writer takes over.

The first kind is ok, so long as it doesn't create plot holes. The second kind is generally just stupid.

Example:

Type 1: revealing that a character's recent evil actions had an ethical explanation.

Type 2: Denying the evil actions took place.
