A p good dissection of what gamergate was and is; what it said it wanted versus what it really accomplished.

That was really good. It made me think about the confederate flag issue. They also have a convenient fiction that they have convinced people of & can get them to defend it as a smokescreen.

A moment that changed me – Gamergate | Brianna Wu | Comment is free | The Guardian

Quote:
And yet, Gamergate isn’t the real problem facing women in games. In software engineering, we have the term “technical debt”. When you don’t do a job correctly, unaddressed problems become harder and harder to solve. The videogame industry has massive “sexism debt”, interest accrued for problems unaddressed for the last 30 years.

Quote:
The truth is, the sexist behaviour that really holds women in games back doesn’t come from the moustache-twirling cartoon villains of Gamergate. It’s the sexist hiring practices of our journalistic institutions. It’s the consistently over-sexualised designs we see. It’s the entitled male-player base that screams from the hills at the smallest inclusions of women. We need the male professionals in our field to understand the unconscious bias that they consistently show against women – yet they sleep peacefully at night, assured that the real troublemakers are the ones sending us death threats.

Default Re: Springtime for Geek Girls?

I'm posting this first video so you can understand some of the context for the second one. File this under How Video Games Can Be The WORST And How Some Gamers Are WORSE.

To give you some background even on that, even though Jim Sterling does a good job: There's a new Metal Gear Solid game that's been released. There's some uproar over one of the selectable companion characters named Quiet. I'll tell you right now some of you will laugh at the explanation at the same time you're grossed out by the presentation of the character.

I'd seen still pictures and read some critique long before the game came out so I had an idea how bad it would be. In Jim's video there are some cutscenes that are completely gross and stupid and disgusting and there's really no way that it's relevant to the progress of the game - even in a so called "weird series" like MGS.

And this video doesn't exactly address this specific issue but it does provide some exposition or clarification on what's happening in that certain segment of the gaming community. I really took notice because of the title of his video: The Thermian Argument. He only briefly mentions the genesis is the Thermians from Galaxy Quest. (Don't google that pea, it's a Trax parody you prolly wouldn't like it.)

The funny part of all of this is the exclusive dichotomy emanating from that segment of the community. They want games to be perceived as an art form. And in a general sense, I can get on board with that. While there definitely is a science to building a game, the mechanics; there's also the touchy feely part where the player interfaces with it, the story.

A large part of enjoying art is talking about it, and not just saying how pretty or engaging an art thing is but also critiquing what it looks like and how it fits in the world and how it impacts or is a reflection of the world in which it exists. What the hard core community seems resentful of are the criticisms their chosen medium has been getting lately. Like it or not these games can't exist in a vacuum or remain unremarked upon, and certainly if you want them to be "art." And maybe especially if you think you or the games are above criticism.

I don't think it revolves at all around a reluctance to allow space for criticism of games as art, though. There are content makers out there who spend hundreds of hours criticizing all aspects of the game industry and design, from story to mechanics and everything in between, even the more artsy sort that goes into the hows and the whys and pontificates on the broader implications. You'll find individual gamers who might get huffy about this game or that criticism, but the gaming space as a whole says "yeah, sure, that's a legitimate thing…"

Unless it's criticism about the portrayal of women, and sometimes minorities, and that's when you get the gamergaters and the anti-sjw crowd shouting to the point that they dominate the conversation by dint of volume. Not to mention the attacks that range from the shitty to the criminal. You don't see anyone hating on Extra Credits for doing videos on procedural generation or imaginative ways WWII games could be better. Just when they talk about the SJW AGENDA(!!!!)

I don't think they have a problem with the general criticism that comes with games being treated as art, just with criticism that touches on their primacy of place within the gaming community. I think it boils down to old fashioned sexism and racism by a small privileged minority who doesn't like being told everything can't be just for them anymore,

Relevant to those videos, I saw that exact same thing with the Bayonetta games. Bayonetta is a witch with magical hair that makes her clothing and weapons out of her hair.

Therefore, when she is fighting, she sometimes uses her hair to attack, and she sometimes needs to use the hair she's using for clothing! So sometimes you catch flashes of her naked body while she's fighting, and during special attacks they may be more than just flashes.

But it all makes sense, of course! The fact that she uses her hair for clothing, the fact that she doesn't have "enough hair" to perform attacks and remain clothed despite her attacks often visually seeming to occupy far more space than her clothes ever did (so there's no conservation of mass here), the fact that her outfits are revealing in the first place even though she obviously could cover and protect her entire body, etc. etc. It all makes sense according to the backstory in the game! But don't worry, the magic stops short of straight up showing you her labia, because while her clothing is needed, it leaves little magical swirls that prevent that. Or the camera looks away. Because a tiny bit of modesty may be enforced without destroying the story. Ergo it's not just about pervy dudes looking at a digital woman's butt.

Today, in you can't make this shit up, Google is celebrating women in tech by asking a man what he does to celebrate women in tech.

I don't know if I'm more annoyed at the tone-deafness, or that they didn't just feature Ensign Steve,

I meant to post about this story days ago.

Microsoft takes blame for 'dancing schoolgirls' at Xbox party - CNET

Dancing 'schoolgirls' damaged the brand, Microsoft execs say - CNET

It's times like this I miss Valleywag. I feel like that's some good apologizing though.

Oh come on! Did you guys see this morning's thing about Microsoft's totally racist Twitter bot? When I get to a real computer, I'll post the links and stuff to the blithe racism thread.

In the meantime, there is a geek girl connection in that they also used it to harrass that women in gaming person (Zoe something?) and she had some insightful things to say about it, of course.

I had an ... interesting ... experience recently.

I play The Elder Scrolls Online occasionally. It doesn't grip me the way that Oblivion and Skyrim did/do, but I do fire it up and play occasionally.

As I often do in such games, I'm playing a female character. So anyway, a few nights ago, I was roaming around when I saw a guy [the character was male; I'm just guessing, but I suspect the player was as well] apparently fighting with thin air. I went closer to investigate, but no enemies ever appeared.

Were the enemies he was fighting just not showing up for me for some reason? Or maybe he was practicing his sword skills? Since his character didn't show a health bar, it wasn't clear to me that he was actually fighting anything, so I figured that maybe he was practicing swinging his sword swings. After a few moments of watching him [apparently] fighting enemies that I couldn't see or otherwise interact with, I wandered off.

A few minutes later, I got an angry message from the player, accusing me of standing by and doing nothing while his character was slaughtered.

I responded with a polite message saying that I was truly sorry, and that I do try to make it a policy to always help out fellow players when I can, as it seems to me the right thing to do. I then explained that I had tried to help out, but nothing ever appeared on my screen that I could interact with, so I wasn't even sure that he was under attack. Maybe it was some sort of weird glitch in the game?

He quickly replied with an "Oh, okay." So that was that, I figured.

Except, almost immediately, I received a message that said, simply, "Marry me."

What? Okay, I know that the game lets Player Characters get married in-game, and presumably, there are some benefits to doing so. And it's just a game. Even so, I'm not going to have my character marry some random guy.

So, I politely declined.

He immediately sent back a somewhat testy-sounding message asking, basically, "Why not?".

Um, dude, why is a polite "Thanks, but no thanks" unacceptable to you?

I decided it was best to end the conversation right there, and did so.

Now, I'm guessing that since my avatar is female and there's nothing in my login name to indicate gender, he thought I was a woman. As such, the experience was mostly amusing to me. But also more than a little creepy.

I'm guessing this sort of thing happens to female gamers fairly frequently.

:sadnod: That's why lots of us try not to let on that we're female. In MMORPGs and other multiplayer games it also tends to keep people from wanting us in parties as well unless we know the folks that are there. I've been kicked from groups when using mics to communicate. First word out of my mouth = kicked.

I thought the display of entitlement was rather interesting. A simple "Thanks, but no thanks" was apparently insufficient, since he almost-immediately demanded to know why I was refusing his marriage proposal.

It was if he thought I was being completely unreasonable for not replying, "Oh yes, a thousand times yes! Thank you so much for asking!" to such a proposal from a complete stranger.

I'm not a fan of online gaming, and bought TES:O only because I liked Oblivion and Skyrim so much. As such, it's the only such game I've played online. I have no interest in talking to other people while playing, and the only times I've ever joined a group were when I needed to do so in order to get through a group dungeon. As such, I don't have a microphone and can't/won't speak to other players. Of course, I can still hear the other players in the group ...

On one such occasion, after I joined a group, one of the players asked after a few moments, "Dude, why isn't she talking?". I presume he was referring to me, since I was the only one with a female avatar. Another player replied, "I think it's because she's scared of speaking to a big, black man."

Huh? If the opportunity had been there, I thought of sending out a message saying: "a.) Not everyone has (or wants) a microphone, b.) Why on Earth would it matter what color your skin is?, and c.) How on Earth am I supposed to know your skin color? You're playing an Orc; does that mean I should assume your skin is green?"

ETA: The experience did get me to wondering what they talked about after we completed the dungeon and I left the group. After all, they clearly thought they were teaming up with a "chick," from their comments. So what, I wonder, did they have to say once they knew I could no longer hear them?

My guess is they talked about how they would like to invite you to a party so you could the hold the beer to keep it cold.
