http://us.mybobino.com/products/cord-wrap

I have one on my keyboard, one for my mouse, one for the phone line, one for the mouse cord, and one for the modem. You would not believe how much more room I have on my desk now.

Also, bitches, the best pen in the world:

Oh yeah. One of the defining features of my former most-used spatula was its melted handle from too much improper contact with the side of a hot pot. You can leave these guys in the pan no matter how hot it is. They could boil in the water along with pasta and not suffer an iota.

I have melted many a utensil in a variety of ways in my life (the heat drying element in the dishwasher being my least favorite). My replacements have been required to be flamethrower proof.

I always turn off the heat dry option when I run the dishwasher and just let it air dry when it's finished. I hope you weren't using electricity to dry your dishes when you were living in the desert! If so, you got what was coming to you in the form of mismatched tupperware sets. :P

They never do get dry without the heat dryer. Those laws of physics don't apply to dishwashers...duh!

It's bad enough I have to wash the dishes before putting them in the dishwasher, you want me to dry them when I take them out too? WTF?

I never thought of looking at Amazon for spatulas. I miss my vintage one with the wooden handle. Most spatulas suck ass. I can't even find vintage ones.

That OXO good grip one is almost useful, except they rip apart turning over pancakes after about 10 pancakes. They are basically disposable.

Most of my former spatulas were yard sale selections, but they weren't vintage enough to have wooden handles. Only one of them was ever fully satisfactory in terms of firmness and edge thinness, and eventually the head got loose and I found myself fishing it out of scrambled eggs on a regular basis.

It's a testament to how weirdly shitty spatulas are these days that I kept using it for months after that started happening because I couldn't find any kind of reasonably effective replacement. When I bought the first of my new ones, I desperately hoped rather than expected that it wouldn't suck. Its performance far exceeded anything I had imaged. Within the first five minutes of my testing it, I threw away the old broken-headed, melted-handle stalwart and all of its failed friends.

Even if a company treats its employees decently, they probably carry products that come from unethical and abusive practices. Even if a product is ethically sourced from a human POV, there is most likely some environmentally harmful thing involved in it's processing or distribution.

It feels almost impossible to buy things without hurting or exploiting someone or something or somewhere. I get depressed about it sometimes.

Also, I don't have a Costco within 100 miles (a source of vexation I assure you), I shop at Publix when I can, but it's expensive and in a town with 10% sales tax

To go along with my terrible company Petco post.

Petfood express
Unfortunately they are currently only in Northern California but they are one of the few pet stores that doesn't sell pets removing any animal-mill worries. When they do have animals they partner with rescues to hold adoption events. I'm currently washing off the slobber of a very excited lab puppy after walking by one of their events and saying hello.

The same sort of thing, but a local chain of pet supply stores in the Tulsa area: Southern Agriculture, where notsosure worked for three years. However, they do sell bunnies and other small rodents, birds, and fish.

Oh you guys. You don't even know. Now that I'm done with school you're going to be seeing so much more of my bullshit that you won't even know what to do with yourselves.

:nonstop:

First thing, the Wet Brush. I discovered this thing in LA last summer, so that tells you just how long this post has been rattling around. I was at the salon and she started brushing my hair with this thing and I was like "omg you don't need to be timid" you know how it feels when someone is all ginger on your hair and you're like, god damnit just get in there! So she's like, oh, lol, no I wasn't, cuz of the WetBrush. The teeth or whatever are these super fine flexible things that just are straight up super gentle on your hair. So I bought one and I regret nothing!

Second, CamScanner. We were at the post office and I wanted to mail this signed lease to the guy with the house on the other end, but I needed a scan first and bey's like "use my phone" and this thing makes the most amazing scans. The guy with the house had been like "I prefer fax" from the beginning, because he is a dinosaur, but after this one he was like "what the hell kind of scanner did you use, the quality is amazing!" and I was like, I know, right? Then me and bey were talking about the things it does and how the different things work, and I'm all like "It's actually a pretty simple algorithm, it wouldn't take much to implement it" (:professor:) and I guess it was just a matter of time, once we had the high-resolution cameras attached to the device that any asshole can develop for.

I cannot heartily endorse these companies or products because I haven't used them, but having met the owners/creators I can attest to their existence.

www.kamikazekiwi.com (products made from recycled comics/toys. I'll have to ask her why the website is apparently only mobile friendly.)

Holy guacamole I love my gutter skillet.

The surface is WAY smoother than modern cast iron, and it's probably about a third lighter, too. Which, apparently what happened was that around 1960, they started skimping on the manufacturing process, skipping the hand polishing and I think changing the content and stuff. My Dutch oven is also done with the old process, but it has some pitting, so the effect isn't as obvious. They're both Wagner Ware Sidney, manufactured in the range of 1910-40, but you can actually just tell from the finish.

The newer stuff is still good, but this is just way better.

So I heartily recommend fishing old skanky cast iron cookware out of the trash, or alternately, if you're a gigantic, stupid crybaby who doesn't know how to do anything, you could just buy some on eBay or whatever, I guess.

The ICE Standard App

ICE Apps for iPhone, Android, and other SmartPhones | ICE Standard Insurance

This puts info on your phone's lock screen (you choose what is displayed) that might be of use to first responders in case of an emergency. My phone is locked down, and even if they broke my password, I have all contacts set up for Kiddo with names like "Papa" and "Nana". Nothing useful if I am unconscious in an ambulance. So now my lock screen shows my name, DOB (age is important to EMTs I guess) and blood type as well as emergency contact numbers. It says "low risk" since I have no medical conditions.

My mom is high risk, so that is important shit for her. Anyone with a serious allergy or condition might could find it useful. If you live or travel where there is Smart911 it will send the info to the emergency operator automatically with a 911 call from that phone.

Yes, if my phone gets lost, they will know my name, blood type, and how to contact 2 of my people. I don't think that's much of a risk to me.

Also, I still love this product after years and years even though their websites totally suck. You can find them on eBay at times. I still have and wear a decade+ old pair and they haven't faded, pilled, frayed, or in any way started to deteriorate. And I wear the shit out of them, yo...to the pool, beach, on hikes, kayaking, canoeing. No way could any regular bathing suit bottom withstand that for over 10 years. Hubby's have held up for almost as long through similar abuse and use. Kiddo will get a pair when he stops growing out of everything every two weeks.

TYLT • PowerPlant • Portable Battery Pack

I took this thing with me to SF yesterday, and I was texting, navigating, facebooking, and uploading photos all day. I even read a book on the Kindle app the whole train ride there and back and had charge to spare.

Damn, how do I make it say low risk? I don't want to leave out my (mild) allergy or my (low-grade) medications, but it looks like if I put anything in those fields it labels me as HIGH RISK!!! I don't want them to freak out like I'm some kind of diabetic or delicate flower, I just don't want them shooting me up with asprin and giving me a rash.

Edit: nm I just left those fields blank and put the info in the "other info" section. Got the green light.
