Did someone argue that eating disorders were uncommon among U.S. women?

Oh, no. But they're saying 75%. I don't know if I'd say that much, but I seriously think it's over 50%--enough that it's actually the norm.

If you count overeating as a disorder, I'll buy that.

Compulsively, yeah, I suppose that's a symptom.

Eating too much every now and again just because something's really good, or you're hungry and ate too fast, though, is more of an oversight, or a momentary foible.

But just as a rule, it seems to be the default for women, and moreso with men too, to be really really fucked up about food. Food manufacturers even target it in their advertising. That's why decadence is now some kind of code word for chocolate.

I've read pretty recently that over 50% of American men AND women are overweight. Either its an eating disorder or your contention that over 50% of women have eating disorders is in question.

Well, yeah. Like I said, compulsive overeating is considered a disorder. Every now and again overeating, I'd argue, is pretty much normal.

And most of the people I've known who I think had eating disorders weren't anorexic or even underweight. The vast majority (and even in my dumb little sample group, that's a lot) would be weird and obsessive about counting fat and calories and making a big show of being on some extreme weight loss diet or something, but would apparently drive themselves insane with that, and end up binging in private. Adult women with jobs and families and lives, actually hiding in their bathroom to eat Ding Dongs, like little kids afraid they're going to get caught. And here's the thing: It's so normalized at this point that I've had several women I've known talk about it as though it were not just normal, but universal.

I don't blame them. A couple of them have gotten on my nerves just because they were really obnoxious about it, but for the most part, it's just depressing. We're all going to hell in a handbasket and all.

I've probably told this story to y'all but I am telling it again. I don't have that many stories and i like this one.

So I am getting my psychiatric evaluation for the kidney donation and somewhere in there this conversation happened (or reasonably alike to this, I don't remember word for word).

Shrink: Have you ever gone without eating for 2 weeks or more to lose weight or done a liquids only crash diet?

Me: No, I've never had an eating disorder

Shrink: Have you ever made yourself vomit, or taken laxatives to lose weight

Me: No, I've never had an eating disorder

Shrink: Have you ever binged or hidden your eating from others or felt guilty about how much you are consuming.

Me: Um, I have never had an eating disorder, do you meet many people that wouldn't recognize these questions or something?

Shrink: Yes, many people do one or more of these things but don't believe they are abnormal or indications of a disorder

Me: Do you have a regular practice or just here at UCLA?

Shrink: I have a private practice in Beverly Hills

I think when combined with binging and eating on the sly it is...it wasn't really phrased as a separate question IIRC. Sort like the alcoholics checklist; do you drink alone, do you hide your drinking, do you feel guilty about your drinking, etc.

Hey, I have a miscellany story from tonight.

I ask hubby "Does Erin have both of our utility tables or just one?"
He responds "What do you mean?".

Now I dare anyone to phrase the question less ambiguously than I did.

Anyway, that's my new response for any clear, straightforward question he ever asks me from now on. "Are you hungry?"... "What do you mean?"

I so detest the medical forms that say "Have you ever______.

Seriously....can't they at least limit it to the last 5 years or less unless it's something like chicken pox that leaves a virus in you for life or major surgeries?

But nooooooo....Instead it's like have you EVER experienced or are now experiencing a rash?
Would that be a possible diaper rash 54 years ago or are you more interested in the poison ivy rash I got in the 1980s?

Cough?
Diarrhea?
Stomach pain?
Sore muscles?
Muscle cramps?
Itchy skin?
Dizziness?
etc...

Anybody older than 10 NOT had these happen multiple times??!!1!!

I might have mentioned this here before, but I was once at a doctor and she was asking me all these weird questions about my "lifestyle" and stuff, and she asked, "Do you always wear a seatbelt?" and I tried really hard not to, but I said, "Well, I'm not wearing one now."

That's one reason I make my intake nice and short. I get the feeling that doctors don't read those 50 page tick a box intake forms anyways...

I don't think the doctors regularly read those damned things. I filled one out for a podiatrist before treatment for a nasty plantar wart, and I answered a long line of "No" for all but one question. The one I Yessed was about my heart murmur, and I wrote out the type of murmur, and in block letters wrote about how I usually need antibiotics before dental work. So I see this twit, he recommends surgery, and I ask the fucking nurse and anybody else who'll listen whether he's prescribed antibiotics. No, no, you don't need them. I figure, okay, maybe it's just for dental work.

Fast forward to the day of the procedure. Fucker shoots my foot full of locals, in a ring around the area, and it hurts like hell. At least half a dozen shots and each feels like it's hitting bone. THEN he asks me whether I have a heart murmur. That's right, he decides NOT to go through with the procedure AFTER turning my foot into Swiss cheese. I had to go back the next week and go through it all over again after a round of antibiotics.

I asked whether he or anybody in his office even bothered to read my questionnaire. Lots of heming and hawing and FUCK I still want to kill him.

Or I'm Thelma and the chairs are Louise?

What is my motivation? It's a long drive.

You can be both, or bring along LM or ODB

I had a turkey in the yard this morning. I couldn't catch it to run it over the border into Canada and become a famous turkeynapper. Krap. Infamy illudes me yet again.

My hubby rocks. He built me

1. Floor to ceiling book shelves (the house plan had a little 6'x6' "study" nook, so it's now a bona fide library)

2. A farm table out of reclaimed ceiling beams from a house he is helping remodel. He left the big circular saw marks, hammer marks, rusty nails and nail holes, and used wrought iron (from a fence panel I bought for 20.00 salvaged from New Orleans) spikes to decorate the trestles.

3. Is building me parsons chairs to go with the table

He brought home like a dozen porch railing panels from the same house. I am studying them to see how to use them. I am thinking a head and foot board at least for the guest room bed.
