Default In Which We Brag About Our Petty Accomplishments

When I went to visit my parents a couple of weeks ago, they told me they had almost booked a trip to Egypt on account of the local Lions Club has a special rate for locals. Sadly the special rate turned out to be a mirage once you added in all the fees and extras, so what looked like a $5,000 trip would actually end up costing over 8 grand.

They had given up, but since they sent me on a school trip to Egypt when I was in the 10th grade and it was my favorite trip of all time, I really, really wanted them to go. A few hours of Googling later and I found them an even better package (the Nile cruise is 2 days longer, and the cruise is completely the best part) for under $5,000 including all the little visa fees and travel insurance and sounds-and-lights extras. It was cheap because you have to book by September 22nd and because you have to pay in full 75 days before the trip, but that wasn't a problem for my parents.

Naturally I browbeat my dad about it (he has a tendency to start with "no" on all matters, a tendency I learned to counter at a very, very young age) the whole week I was with them. He sort of grumped about it and tried to ignore me, but that's alll part of the dance.

Yesterday they told me that they've booked the trip. They'll be going to Egypt the second week in December. I am absurdly proud to have harangued them into this, even though it's hardly some superhuman achievement to convince them to do something they already wanted to do for cheaper than they planned.

What entirely unremarkable accomplishment gives you a special glow?

I'm somewhat proud of gently browbeating my sister to get her to a doctor to check and see if she has ADD. Turns out it's not ADD, but more likely bipolar, with the medication she was on exacerbating the manic periods. I am so happy she's on the path towards getting treatment! I am really happy she is living with me, instead of scraping by in poverty, not close to any treatment center (she's a vet, and the Veteran's clinic is about 3 minutes away from us).

I am proud of putting my son in dance/gymnastics even though he is one of only two boys in a class of 16 or so. In Alabama. During Fall sports season.

He really seemed to enjoy it, and he looks so cute doing ballet position one, and in his tap shoes, and walking on the high beam I want to squeezle him.

Chris, I don't think that's a petty accomplishment. It's kind of major, in fact. I hope your sister continues to improve. :cheer:

Shea, the Alabama factor makes your accomplishment more than petty, too. I'm surprised there's another boy in the class.

So, this is kinda stupid and before I start, here's a pre-emptive "FUCK YOU' for Adam and his giving me shit for my cooking techniques.

The kid wanted gravy for her mashed potatoes. We're not really gravy people and I grilled steaks, so no real meat juices to make a nice gravy. I improvised by using some canned French onion soup, strained and mixed with some roux. Once thickened nicely, she had gravy.

And it wasn't that bad tasting, either.

So, there, fairly petty and I'm inordinately proud.

Oh and "FUCK YOU', Adam.

The other boy happens to be an acquaintance of ours, so he and Kiddo already knew each other, and I knew he was going to be there. Funny thing though is that both I and his mother had called the school specifically to ask about boys (all the pics on their websites were girls only), and were both assured that they had plenty of boys....except during Fall and Spring team sports apparently.

Also, when/if any redneck asks, the gymnastics was specifically initiated due to Kiddo's wanting to do Extreme Martial Arts like . Def not girly

I am pretty proud of setting fire to my toilet (or rather the reservoir). Even though I didn't do it on purpose, it turned out it was the right thing to do. I now have a much better flusher that is way less loud as well, my walls are freshly painted, I stimulated the local economy and the owner's insurance paid for the whole thing.

I patched up my CPAP mask with a safety pin, as the Velcro™ has partially worn out. I read six chapters of an actual book last night. I got 8 hours of sleep. I made myself a giant one pound hamburger steak for lunch. That's a whole steaming pile of petty accomplishments. Now I'm exhausted. I think I'll lay down for a nap.

I don't even like gravy, wei, so I'm not going to give you any shit for whatever abomination you're passing off as gravy to your poor kid (although, if you want her to be that easy to fool into thinking whatever you pulled out of the recesses of your cabinet and heated in the microwave is "gravy", you might want to start homeschooling her). At least you're not defiling shrimp with ketchup or giving her a slice of american cheese on a cracker and telling her it's pizza this time.
