I'm really tired and it's only 3.30pm. And no one say "I told you so!" Things will be much easier when we move back to our old house and elderly Lyn moves into the adjoining apartment. But for now, I'm sleeping on the floor on a couple of cushions, so I'm getting hardly any sleep at all 'cos it's so uncomfortable. And Lyn is up early and goes to bed late, and the tv is on much of the day and all evening at a higher volume than I can handle. But handle it I must, for the time being. I hope we can move within the month, 'cos any longer and I might go mad with sleep deprivation and tv-induced psychosis. And the weather is crap, too. Bloody hell, I'm getting tired! :tired:

Anyway, better snap out of it - Zoe will be home from school soon and will be wanting food. For now, Lyn is just happy reading the newspaper. :phew:

Well, after spending nearly the entire weekend battling this stupid cold (which is now nearly done), I'm feeling quite a bit better. I now have 48 institutions on my "to apply" list, and I've applied to 22 of them, thus far. :)

For the first time ever, I've dropped a student for academic misconduct. One of the homework problems involved a relatively simple proof by contradiction. This student decided--rather than stopping by during my (fucking numerous!) office hours for help--to instead plagiarize a bunch of stuff off of the internet involving recurrence relations (and whatever he copied, it either wasn't correct or didn't apply at all to the given problem).

I have recently landed a job. It has no internet for me to visit :ff: on, though. I work Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday from 6am to 4.30pm. So generally I won't be online at all those four days since I come home and pretty much go to sleep.

Just got a 'phone call informing me that this time next year I'll be in a rather warmer, sandier climate.

This irks me slightly: I'm most of the way through a transfer to a different unit. I've no idea what happens now, I guess things will settle down one way or another in the next week or two.

For the record, staying up until four in the morning chatting with friends over a bottle of wine is not particularly wise when you're moving house the next day.

Nonetheless, fun was had and things got moved, nearly all to the right places. And the net works at the new digs without any kind of technical drama whatsoever. And I saw a damn good gig to top the day off. All in all, a successful weekend.

I have been offered the position of Sr. Gas Measurement Specialist for the Tulsa Region with my division at work. I accepted the position on temporary basis this afternoon. I am to start pay negotiations for this position on Monday. I have no doubt they will be fair as I will be doing this by myself with little or no help from anyone from the other region offices. Really doing a lot of the same duties that I am doing now plus some new ones and more responsibility. I was called upstairs this morning for the five minute interview and greeted by my old boss from SLC/Tulsa. I look forward to working with him again. Yeah, still more travel, but right now it will mostly be going to Denver. I am already scheduled for 3 trips to the mile high city in the next couple of months. So that extra class I was wanting to take in November is out, out, out!!

I just applied to join the Volunteer Coast Guard. How cool is that? There are no reasons why I can't get in so in a couple of weeks I'll be a Coastie. And all by accident. When I woke up this morning I had no plans to actually join, just to to potter around, cleaning stuff as part of my "work for the dole" obligations. Heh, I'm so looking forward to it, I'm tempted to pull out my old eye patch and talk like a pirate for the rest of the week. :pirate:

Hey, Liv, there are no 'sailor' smilies :(

Ah, watching the best laid plans gang aglay, as it were. Half of the documentary project subjects just pulled out without so much as a lame excuse. I have my own deeply cynical suspicions, but I guess we'll see what happens. Seeing how one-sided the result will be, I'd rather the whole thing be scrapped, but fortunately I'm just the guy who's trying to figure out 2 minutes' worth of music and running a camera on occasion.

A discussion with my SIL that started with her saying her husband wanted to see New Orleans sometime has led to their family, our family, Mom and Dad, and my high school BFF-whom I haven't seen in at least 5 years- and her mom (10 people total) going the day after Thanksgiving for the weekend...Dad donated from his neverending supply of free hotel nights at a place consisting of a hodgepodge of historic and modern buildings in the Garden District.

Should be very interesting. I hope it's fun and not drama.

Continuing to turn this thread into a ray of fucking sunshine, the Texas State Bar just rejected my wife's application for admission based on her experience alone, saying she must take the goddamned exam. Their reason? Because her law school wasn't ABA accredited. She has over seven fucking years of experience. According to them, she could have TWENTY years and they'd still reject it. They could have fucking told us that before we spent countless hours working on their torturously long application and she went chasing after all of her previous employers to get letters sent in to prove her experience.

So now we have another half a year on a painfully tight budget so we can pay a babysitter to give my wife time to study for their stupid fucking exam. Our only possible recourse is to get some sort of special dispensation from the Feds for her to practice Immigration law (which is 100% federal jurisdiction, no state law involved) on the basis of her active California bar membership. I find it difficult to feel optimistic about our chances, but she's still going to give it a shot as it beats the hell out of the alternative.

In better news, I'm going to California next week on the company dollar. I have to train somebody on one of the obscure compliance fields for which I somehow became the company's subject-matter expert on. I intend to hit several restaurants with cheap food and good Margaritas, so I can get smashed without having to pay for it. Oh, and I'll probably say hello to my Mom, too.

Another ray of fucking sunshine here. I'm trying hard to maintain an even keel.

My eldest daughter is a missing person. I think she's okay, for now, somewhere in the Tulsa area. I have my theories as to her whereabouts and in whose company she currently is, but for now, I don't know any specifics. I do know where her son is, he is at my parents home about 110 miles away and has been since Monday, a day of work I missed because of this trainwreck. I will be picking him up tomorrow to bring him back to our home. He's been staying with my parents because my wife has been in Denver since Sunday afternoon, attending a gas measurement school required for her new job.

This started Saturday when I agreed to keep my grandson overnight after taking him to Hallowzooeen at the Tulsa Zoo Saturday evening. I was supposed to drop him off where they were living at noon Sunday. She wasn't there. I would've filed a missing persons report had I not heard from her roomates that she had been there Monday evening to pick up some personal effects, told them she was moving out, and that she had called me (she had not).

I'm trying not to go crazy, or at least crazier than I already am. I have mixed feelings about the prospect of having to raise my grandson. On the one hand, I thought I was done raising children, and damned tired of it too. The idea of another 14-15 years of it tears at my gut something fierce. Then again, I can't abandon the little guy either. Shit. Fuck. Damn.

The lads gave me a very touching farewell yesterday. I start a new career as a cavalryman in Bradley CFVs. I'm going to miss the tanks.

Since I stopped posting here in July, you'd think I'd have lots of news. Sadly, not much has happened:

- Instead of resurrecting my car buying thread, I'll just let y'all know I finally bought one. I went with a Mazdaspeed 6. There was a pretty big rebate in September and both of our other cars just got paid off. It's pretty darned fast and a good everyday driver to boot.

- Although I don't know if I'll actually be able to kill an animal, I'm going deer hunting for the first time in my life this coming weekend. I'm having a bit of a moral struggle but I think I've succeeded in justifying it.

- I had to brief some PhD dudes from MIT for work. I'm used to briefing/speaking to high-ranking military sorts but this was very different. I was a bit out of my element with the technology and I was unused to being one of the dumber folks in the room.

- We had to put down one of our older cats. She became diabetic and went downhill very fast. She was about 18 years old but it was still tough on my wife and me. I made a nice pine box and stained it all purty and we found a nice tombstone-like piece of granite from my wife's landscaping store. Now we can see her down at the bottom of the garden while washing dishes from the kitchen window.

I'm sure there's probably some more but I'll stop boring you for now.

I'm back in Kalleeforneeah for 5 days. I'm lying to my Mom and telling her I'm arriving tomorrow. I'm gonna go out and see some friends tonight. Training some numbnut at the Calif. office for the next 3 days, so I'll only be by the board sporadically.
