Juno's Arrival
Juno has arrived in orbit around Jupiter.
I remember thinking the day it left, "How the hell am I going to wait 5 years for this?"
I don't think people are excited enough about this. We know so little about Jupiter. Imagine that we only had pure speculation on what makes Mars red -- that's how little we know on Jupiter right now. But rather than one dinky drop-probe, this will have about nine skin-of-teeth close orbits to measure it with a whole bank of instruments and eyes.
Then it will also immolate itself, because that's how they roll. And because Jupiter's hilariously dense radiation belts will be nearly done cooking it anyway.

Re: Juno's Arrival
Here they are: The god, Jupiter, is on the left - he is also the god of lightning; his wife, Juno, is centre - her magnifying glass symbolizes her search for truth; and on the right is Galileo Galilei holding his telescope in one hand and a model of planet Jupiter in the other.
They are one-and-a-half inches tall, unarticulated, and made of aluminium.

Re: Juno's Arrival
I am looking forward to the discoveries Juno will make as it explores the Solar System's most massive planet. Also, considering its mass, does anyone here think Jupiter needs to go on a diet, or is that just me.

Re: Juno's Arrival
I should know better than to look at facebook comments... Scores of people complaining about the disappointing quality of Juno's optical pictures. Juno's camera was literally an afterthought, but nobody's mentioned why. - Juno's in a highly eccentric polar orbit, with screamingly-fast close passes, long intervals spent really far away, and very little inbetween. These are far from ideal photographic conditions.
- We've got loads of great photos from missions in equatorial orbits. Even the Hubble can see it.
- The camera's doing its job of showing the poles, the one bit we haven't actually seen already.
- Juno's quickly killing itself in Jupiter's radiation belts. Every moment spent sending picture postcards is time NOT spent sending data from instruments which we haven't looked at Jupiter with before.
Basically, the camera's there to prove to the public it's doing something. Once it adjusts for the close orbit, Juno can begin its real work.

Wait what, people are bitching about images like,
Oh sorry, only a few images of something unseen by humans over the last 10,000 years, and not in 4K, literally unwatchable!

Did humans see it 11,000 years ago?

Mostly that, with the head-hole cut at the pole, it'd make something like a mexican poncho.

Not according to Wikipedia.

The Juniper tree's name is derived from the Latin word juniperus. In Latin, juniperus is combination of the word junio, which means young, and parere, to produce, hence youth producing, or evergreen.[1] Ginepro (Italian for Juniper), Ginevra (Italian variant form of Juniper), and Ginny are other names that also refer to the Juniper tree.

Re: Juno's Arrival
But the latin junio probably comes from Juno, the wife of Jupiter…

Re: Juno's Arrival
Juno has had some problems and close calls, but is still online and functioning. It went into Safe Mode on Oct 18 2016, missing its second close pass, fortunately Safe Mode did its job of spotting a computer malfunction and returning control to NASA.
A bigger problem is the ongoing engine valve issue... It carries helium to pressurize propellants, and the valves for that are reacting sluggishly. It's unclear whether the engines will work as expected. Rather than risk losing control, they've put off the period-reduction burn and let the spacecraft continue in its slower orbit for now.
Passes 3 and 4 were completed without incident and all eyes open (nearly - pass 3 missed one due to a software update).
So Juno is still performing its function of looking deeper than Jupiter's outer layer. Keep your fingers crossed. Pass 5 should happen March 27th.
