Surgery on this is scheduled for next Tuesday. Also seen is the titanium plate in my neck. A few more surgeries like this, I will be fully bionic. Maybe they should replace my bones with adamantium.

Surgery went well. Despite the general anesthesia alone being equal to 10 micromorts (about the same risk as riding a motorcycle 60 miles), I survived with all faculties intact. Now I cannot sleep.

My heel pain, the stuff that cleared up just before the sciatica started, is back and worse than ever. I'm limping almost all the time now and it hurts even just sitting here. :sadcheer:

Goddamn, stupid laptop keyboard ... accidentally hit a combo of keys that mean "previous page, please" and lost my post. And I was just hitting my stride, too. :pout:

Long story forced to be short: I NEED JERB!

My skill is coding on the IBM i but there are fewer jobs doing that than there used to be. The ones that are there pay boo-koo bucks but they are very few and far between. (People who have them won't leave them; would you?)

So ... I've reached an age where I could probably get away with a career change.

Ideas? I'm great with people (I must say) so I guess some kind of support or teaching might work. But I has no degree; only work experience.

No advice from here, but maybe I should go into recruitment (hey, maybe you should) - everyone seems to be needing it. The company I quit last December has just announced another round of redundancies (they shed 20-30% of staff about 15 months ago; I started looking after surviving that). The friends still there who ignored the writing on the wall are now asking if I know of anything.

One or two other on :ff: are looking. And I am not very optimistic about the company I'm in now.

The company I refer to isn't suffering from a bad economy. It's suffering from shit management and shit sales.

My mom is having a mental break at age 83, my dad's bones/vertebrae are weak and breaking (also at age 80+, avoid Prevacid, well known side effect weak bones) and my son's Individualized Education Plan (he is eligible for Autism services) has him going to one of 5 middle schools all half an hour or more away from our house in a reasonable fast car, with no traffic. FML.

Smile Re: What's up with you?

This is going to be a long post, but I sincerely hope you will take the time to read all of it.

I had a funeral on Thursday for a church member who has also been a very good friend for the last 26 or so years. He and his wife have practically adopted Mrs. Angakuk and me. So much so that the other day one of his daughters told me, only partly in jest, that she tells people I am her step-brother (I would have guessed "crazy uncle"). So, it was a pretty tough service for me to conduct, but also a labor of love. However, that is not what this post is about. This post is about something totally and awesomely wonderful that happened to me over the weekend because of that funeral.

On the day of the funeral there was a young woman, whom I had never met before, who just went completely to pieces after seeing him in the casket before the service started. She was crying inconsolably as she and her mother exited the sanctuary and passed by my office in the foyer. I happened to be standing just outside the office and invited them in. I also offered the young woman what I hoped were some comforting and affirming words, though one never really knows if their words are the right ones at the right moment. At the lunch following the service I had another opportunity to visit with her and her parents. It turned out that the deceased was her grandfather's brother. Her grandfather had died a couple of years previously and she had sort of adopted the deceased as her grandpa in his place. In the course of our conversation I also found out that all three of them would be attending the same church event that I would be at that weekend.

Fast forward to Friday evening. I found myself seated at a table next to the table the young woman was seated at with a group of teenagers who were also present for the event (one of those deathly boring church conventions that I hate like the plague but am required by the terms of my call to attend). As I took an opportunity to escape the tedium for a moment I passed by her table on my way out and stopped to have a word with her. She rather suprised me by giving me a big hug. Upon my return, as I passed her table again, she handed me a note and gave me another big hug. The note was brief and I am going to quote it in full because it was also awesome.

"Hey I'm writing this because I want to thank you for helping me through 'grandpa' D's death. I want to ask you if you will take his place as grandpa if it would be anyone to be grandpa there is no one better for the job than you. So I thank you."

I was so moved by the request that I even teared up a bit. I walked back to her table, put my arm around her shoulders, and told her that I would be honored and delighted to be her "grandpa". The next day I talked with her mother about the request to see if she was alright with this. She thought it was great idea. I also spent about an hour getting acquainted with and bonding with my new grand-daughter.

My job as a pastor has had it's share of both problems and rewards. But this thing that is happening with this young woman (she will be turning 18 in a couple of weeks) is quite possibly the most extraordinary and affirming thing that has ever happened to me in my capacity as a parish pastor. If it should turn out that everything else I have ever done as a pastor has been a complete waste of time (not that I think that is the case) this one thing will have made it all more than worthwhile.

I don't have any children of my own, so obviously I don't have, and won't be having, any grandchildren either. I don't know squat about being a grandpa, particularly a grandpa to a seventeen year old girl, but I am going to do my best to make sure that she never regrets having asked me to take on that role. I feel like I have been given a priceless gift and I just hope that I will prove to be worthy of having received it.

I thought about posting this in the Two Minutes of Love thread, but this is just too big of a thing for me and two minutes doesn't even begin to do it justice.

If you have taken the time to read this whole post, I thank you for your time and your consideration.

So you're a god-grandpa?
