Default Post the best voices.

She's ...uh 19? I think? Her name is Nakamoto Suzuka and she sings for idol groups in Japan along with the metal/idol fusion group known (jeez I figure everyone's heard of this by now) as Babymetal.

All silly aside I really think she's the absolute best voice in music right now, but if you have a better one, please post it! I listen to all genres of music and what captivates me the most is the voices that come through.

So any genre, any type of music is welcome, but bring that voice. I want to hear someone who can truly sing. Let's do this :)

And it's not just for female voices... men can do it too!

ICS Vortex layered his own voice 4 times in this song to amazing effect! His high pitched cleans, his deeper lows and his shredding growls along with a baritone to add effect. It turned out incredible. One of my favorite songs ever made.

Post good voices! I want to hear them all!

I have plenty to post myself, and I can do this all day, but I want to see everyone else's input too... so this will be my last for now.

When it comes to "best voices," I immediately think of whoever did the vocals for "The Infinite Universe" from Uchuu Senkan Yamato.

Keeping with a sci-fi theme, "Diva Dance" from The Fifth Element was deliberately written to be impossible for a human to sing. But dang if Jane Zhang doesn't manage to pull it off nearly perfectly. Skip ahead to about 3:20, if you like, and prepare to be amazed.

I like that. His voice has the proper deep tone for the music he's singing with. Especially in the interludes where he's whispering.

I present this as a counter-offer to that, someone whose voice should be known quite well even amongst neophytes:

TLR, your first one had like, uh. no.

The second one had incredible operatic vocals but eh.

I hope that did something for someone, because opera does nothing for me :(

I do know the scene from the fifth element, but I guess I'm alone in feeling the bizarre music doesn't work right without the cinematic angle that it was born to perform.

This Russian guy can hit the high notes

This Kazakh guy on a singing competition can match him pretty well also

Anyway, that Vitas guy came to my attention because of this more bizarre electronic song performed with these weird costumes:

Both Orzabal and Adams, really. The whole Seeds of Love album is an unjustly overlooked prog classic:

As clichéd as it is to choose, this whole album is really one of the finest vocal performances ever:

This may be the best showcase of Mike Patton's voice, though I'm not sure if it's possible to have just one:

Again, I'm not sure just one song can showcase Kyo's voice, but this might be the best. Video may be disturbing and/or NSFW; I don't remember if I've watched it

I could probably listen to Alison Krauss sing the phone book

That may be enough for now. IDK. May come back later when I think of more.

I wasn't thinking in terms of range or versatility for the first one, but simply in terms of a truly beautiful singing voice. Of course, such things are very-much in the ears of the listener.

You want voices? I'll give you voices.

Being a country boy at heart, I have to let you in on a little secret.

Dolly. Parton. One of the most prolific singer-songwriters of the genre.

Another Parton song by another voice.

RIP

Staying in the lady-pop arena. I'll put up Celine Dion's Let's Talk About Love Album. It's the one with "My Heart Will Go On" on it - and it's not the best song of that set. Say what you want, like her or not, you cannot deny she's got a voice for days.

This isn't something I enjoy, it's just I'm aware of due to keeping a finger lightly upon the First Nations pulse. It's something really different though, that I'd like to share:

Inuit Throat Singing: Kathy Keknek and Janet Aglukkaq (long) - YouTube

It kind of reminds me of beat boxing, but without a beat.

I'm down with the Dilinger stuff but I'm not sure it's the best showcase of Patton's talent. I'd argue that it was with the following:

101 North by Tomahawk:

Ashes to Ashes by Faith No More, in which he almost sounds like Seal for one verse:

And... insane as it sounds... Jizzlobber.

And let's all be honest here, no thread about voices could ever be complete without the late, great Chris Fucking Cornell.

His voice was an absolute cannon and this song is probably the best work he ever did:

BIRTH RITUAL

I mean, you should probably start off by mentioning Freddie Mercury, Whitney Houston, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion and Michael Jackson if you're talking about impressive singing voices in pop music.

But I assume you're also interested in distinctive or interesting voices.

Anyway, Anohni (previously known as Antony Hegarty, of Antony and the Johnsons, before transitioning) has an interesting voice. She collaborated with Björk on a few songs, including The Dull Flame of Desire which showcases her distinctive voice pretty well.

Oh yeah, and Björk is pretty cool too.

The song Blind with Hercules & Love Affair is a bit more commercially accessible though:

We're talking about groups that have epic mixtures of clean and harsh vocals, so:

Man, that fucking opening of Book of the Fallen still gives me chills. Totally a capella and perfect harmony.

That's the only a capella moment of Caladan Brood that's been recorded as of yet, but I would add to it the wonder that is Wild Autumn Wind. About 9 and a half minutes in, it takes a step up from great to amazing, and the vocals after the solo are absolutely breathtaking. I'd actually consider them better than those in Book of the Fallen. The ending chorus is also wonderful.

I'm going to piggyback on your post a bit because I feel like there are things you completely missed.

Opeth is a band I've had a long bizarre relationship with, from love to apathy, but in the early to mid 2000s they could do no wrong. And Mikael certainly has a hell of a voice.

And I love me some Bjork but what always stuck with me was her older stuff, this in particular:

She sounds like she has a throat full of sand through the whole song and it still manages to sound amazing.

Ah hell here's one more since I can't sleep. Burton C. Bell of Fear Factory sounds like a fucking monk or something, and then unleashes growls that are like "Where the fuck did that come from?"

So many lives, so many innocent... BURN

I think it's that his voice has like NO VIBRATO WHATSOEVER. I don't know how that even works.

To oppose that let's throw in the absolute QUEEN of vibrato:

Shakira!

God damn I love her voice. And her body. And her everything.

(I think I finally gave away my celebrity crush... shhhhh, don't tell anyone)

Always inspiring to hear the opening of Knots by Gentle Giant:

Love pretty much anything from Tori Amos:

Not remotely conventional, but I also love me some Captain Beefheart, especially on Willie the Pimp by Zappa:

Oh and Mark Volman and Howard Kaylan do some lovely harmonizing on 200 Motels as well:
