I know, right? I always hear tell that the show didn't do well on Nick because it was "too adult" for that demo and it probably should have been on MTV or somewhere. But whenever I ask about what makes it so adult all anybody can come up with is the stuff about how school is just a glorified asylum and will turn you into a soulless zombie and I'm like that's not adult, that's just life!

Re: Animated series
Oh! They recently released a new version of Heman and The Masters of the Universe on Cartoon Network which was shortly after cancelled. It was excellent in artwork and storyline. The whole series is on DVD (maybe in just one volume, too).
I forgot all about the 80s. Shout out for Charlie Brown.
Oh, Garfield and Friends. I'm sure you'll find something you can all enjoy. Show him the stuff you grew up on for the nostaglia/ bonding.

Or the graphic violence.
It's a seriously great show, but IMO not appropriate for anyone less than maybe 14.

Re: Animated series
Gonzo accidentally reminded me: Teen Titans. Should be available via netflix (probably not INSTANT, dunno). It's a lot more silly than the for serious Justice League.

Maybe I'm a weirdo purist, but I prefer the Japanese language version.

Count and I were YouTubing him the other day. Ah Penfold. Baron Greenback and of course, DM. Magic show.
Speaking of magic, how about a real life show, Monkey Magic? Now that was awesome.

I rather love Ami and Yumi's "Long Beach Nightmare" which is a happy bubble gum song . . . which is your Hell.

One of them I'm pretty sure I recognize from the album of Swedish songs my parents play sometimes... The other one was clearly a Swedish adaptation of Jingle Bells, although I didn't recognize it.

I waltzed right in here to do that. Bonus: he'll learn a lot (seriously, I know the US capitals thanks to that show), and a lot of the humor is for adults.
I'm going to second Rocko. Enough slapstick to amuse kids, and wordy gags for adults.

Re: Animated series
Parental Advisory: Powerpuff Girls is kind of violent and bloody. Like someone almost always gets a bloody tooth knocked out in super slow-mo in every battle.

Re: Animated series
Let me second Samurai Jack, though it might be a little sophisticated for a too-young viewer. Jack is, without a doubt, my favorite character in any animated series. Period.
The episodes can be surprisingly sophisticated, and they're clearly written by and for adults. Despite that, there's no "adult" content -- i.e. vulgar language, etc. There's plenty of action in the typical episode, which may appeal to younger viewers, but it's very stylized.
Good and Evil are very clearly delineated. Aku is pure evil, but Mako (his voice actor) chews the scenery with such relish that Aku is far funnier than frightening. And Jack is simply the noblest character imaginable -- without seeming either saccharine or annoying. He is, quite simply, the epitome of selfless devotion to one's highest ideals.
Despite the fact that the two main characters are more or less Pure Good and Pure Evil, respectively, many episodes emphasize that it's dangerous to judge others based on their appearance. Similarly, several episodes present characters who seem to be bad guys at first, but turn out to have good reasons for their actions. And vice versa. There are also several episodes which emphasize that different people may have very different outlooks on life and views of "proper" behavior -- and that this doesn't necessarily make them bad people.
I do love that show.

Thanks all, I have gone through and added to the queue. I see that Samurai Jack is on the TV, but want to maybe start at the beginning.

Re: Animated series
Samurai Jack is also famously famous for having a killer soundtrack if you are into really good techno music. Like, that was one of their goals when making the show and hiring composers and stuff.

That was one of the better series that CN came out with. Simple art, good storyline.

Re: Animated series
I just remembered: Sym-Bionic Titan, which is helmed by Genndy Tartakovsky (Powerpuff Girls, Samurai Jack, Clone Wars cartoons). Like those, it might be on the violent side, but good and evil are well delineated.

Re: Animated series
So, to be truthful, I never watched all of Samurai Jack. My daughter and I are watching the series now through the magic of DVR.
And since I can't turn off my need to create CoH alts:
