Default Microwave Egg Poacher

OK, I am totally crap at cooking poached eggs. Ages ago, I bought a microwave egg poacher but it has absolutely no instructions on in, apart from piercing the egg yolk before cooking.

I have no idea how long to bung it in the microwave for. I have an 850W microwave. Any ideas on how long I should poach my eggs for?

I don't poach eggs (assuming poach means cooked in water) in the microwave, but I do cook an individual egg in a little pyrex ramiken that comes out looking sorta poached (spray with PAM, crack in egg, use butter bits to keep yolk centered, cover with paper towel.)

I usually cook it in my microwave on high for 40-45 seconds. 50 seconds totally cooks the yolk and whites. Anything longer and there is sure to be an explosion (hence the paper towel.)

I know it's not the same, but maybe the times can help you judge.

ETA: Here's one that looks cool Nordic Ware Microwave Egg Poacher

It doesn't look like water is involved, so maybe it's similar to my method for one egg and the time would work. The customer reviews for the product give this info:

Thanks for that pesci.

I have an egg poacher where you put water in the pan and the eggs into their own little bowls, and put on the hob. I can never get the timing right for a cooked white and runny yolks.

I'll give the microwave one a try to see if I fair any better with that one.

:giggle:

The top of the stove, where the gas rings are for cooking. What do you call it then?

We call the top of the stove the stovetop, oddly. :giggle:

Some also call it the 'grill' or 'range', I think.

I blame this thread (and the fact that I had poached eggs while in Michigan) for the fact that I decided to try poaching some eggs today. I put about 1/4 of water in an 8" frying pan on the stove, turned the electric burner on to medium and cracked two eggs in it. When the whites began to solidify, I covered the pan. A few minutes later, I uncovered it and removed the eggs. Sadly, the yolks were hard. So! That's how not to do it. :)

A thousand apologies for starting this thread, vm, but that's exactly what happens to me when poaching eggs.

It's okay, they weren't bad really.

I do wish I hadn't opted to eat them on an onion bun with ketchup, though. :giggle:

Now you're talking.

Poached eggs, with a runny yolk, on an onion bun with ketchup. Sounds good to me. :hungry:

I knew I should've re-checked this thread before I finally tried it. I put an egg in a little glass cup, tossed it in the nuker and set it to cook for 1 minute on high. Then I watched. All seemed to be going well until there was 17 seconds left on the clock, then it exploded. It was a hilarious sight - I highly recommend it. However I was only able to salvage a couple of chunks big enough to eat while the rest was splattered all over the interior of the microwave, so definitely not a way to amuse yourself if you're hungry.

heh, I've found a recipe for making poached eggs in the crockpot, vm. Not as fast as the microwave, but much less messy, I imagine.

It calls for a medium to large oval pot, but that's probably if you're making a lot of them.

1) Pour about 1/2 inch water, as hot as possible into cooker. Cover & cook on HIGH for 20-30 minutes,

2) Coat custard cups with cooking spray (or other non-stick stuff), one for each egg. Place cups in cooker. Cover and cook on HIGH for 12-15 minutes if you like the yolks runny.

Usually, I'll boil water and then set it to simmer. Leave a few inches of water in the pot/pan. I add a touch of salt as well. Then, with the water simmering I drop the egg in and turn off the heat. 2 minutes should give you a runny yolk, 4 minutes the yolk will be pretty much solid.

Our house was the first to get a microwave oven (due to a forced remodel after the 1971 Sylmar earthquake.) My brother and I used to come home from school and experiment with snacks -- hamburger and egg sandwiches were our favorites.

We learned the fun.. erm... hard way about the exploding egg thing, though. The first time we made an egg in a bowl, we set the microwave on 20 seconds and looked (nope, not done), then another 10 (nope, not done), then 15. It looked done through the little door, so my brother took it out and looked closer. :chemist: Good thing he was wearing his safety glasses, but he had some burns on his face. He thought it was hilarious, in spite of the injury. And we went out, bought another dozen eggs and proceeded to blow them all up. In the interest of science and culinary knowledge, of course. Quite a mess, but we cleaned it up and our folks were none the wiser.

Ah, the life of latchkey kids.
