Re: Trivial things that annoy you
Probably not exactly what you meant liv, but in a similar vein I hate when people say something like "I don't like Indian food" or "I don't like Chinese food". It's not like there is only 3 things Indians eat, there are hundreds of different dishes with different tastes, textures, ingredients... how can you just rule them all out?
I usually say I don't like onions, but really I just don't like the taste of raw onions. Sou says I actually love onions since I love so many dishes that have onions or are onion based (like curries). But man, raw onion taste is just wrong.

It's totally what I meant. Categorical dismissals like that are ridiculous on their face. A few billion people aren't all eating the same four things that you think of Indian and Chinese food, especially since those four things are probably some bastardized greasy version that bears little relation to the original.

That doesn't count because it's not just because you don't like it.
Also, since you are all talking about vegetarians and tomatoes, I am going to retell one of the major reasons I got all judgmental about it.
I was making a Thanksgiving dinner for a whole bunch of people, and the girlfriend of one of the guys who was coming told me that she was vegetarian and allergic to tomatoes. I already was making a vegetarian option, but it had tomatoes in it, so I was sort of panicking and trying to figure out what to do when her boyfriend pointed out that she put ketchup on everything, and it came out that she was just saying she had a tomato allergy because she didn't like raw tomatoes. I was already cooking for a ton of people and had way too many things to do, accommodating all kinds of different restrictions and preferences, and she was going to try to trick me into making a whole nother entree just for her. And of course, it later came out that she wasn't even vegetarian after all. She just liked to think of herself as one or something.
That's the real thing I don't like. If you have actual food sensitivities or you're on a specific diet for ethical or religious reasons or whatever, I have no beef with that. I won't cook for people with severe food allergies just because I don't have the facilities to do that, but I have no beef with them either. It's the picky eaters who talk about it all the time that bug me.
I mean, I have a bunch of things I don't care for. I don't really like squashes very much, I don't like turnips or rutabagas or those other things like that, and I don't like tomatoes on sandwiches unless it's a tomato sandwich or sometimes toasted cheese. I'll eat them and sometimes buy them and make things with them, even, but I don't seek them out is all. And Matlock doesn't like raw tomatoes at all, but he doesn't bother anyone about it. If I make a salad with tomatoes in it, he'll just try not to get any in his. That doesn't bug me at all. I also get all his pickles, and I am actively in favor of that.

Re: Trivial things that annoy you
I was a picky eater as a kid, but about the only thing that stuck with me is my enduring hatred for beans. I even grew to love a few things I clearly recall hating as a kid, like onions or mustard. I'll still eat what I'm served as a guest, or at least try to eat it, unless it's refried beans, because at that point I figure the discourtesy of me throwing up all over their table outweighs the discourtesy of declining their food.
I do avoid some foods because I've never tried them, and I'm a huge coward about trying new foods on my own effort or dime.

Re: Trivial things that annoy you
I was a hugely picky eater as well, now the one thing that really puts me off is texture. Mostly it's a preparation thing, I think. I hate mushrooms because they're squidgy, same with cooked squashes. I hate cooked greens but will happily eat most of them raw.

I used to hate most of the veggies that are now my favourites, like asparagus and spinach. Still not a fan of brussel sprouts though.

There is a MASSIVE field of brussel sprouts near us right now. Like acres and acres of brussel sprouts. They're not quite done yet, but when they are I'll... do nothing because they smell stinky and taste the same

Can I just say I generally don't like cruciferous vegetables and have that count as one thing? (Except that's a lie because cabbage is good.)

As an ingredient in something, when properly cooked, onions can be tolerable.
But raw onions are an abomination unto all that is good and decent.

Raw onions are a delicious, crunchy delight, be it on a sandwich, sprinkled on top of a stew (especially chili) right before serving, or just munched while you're preparing them for something else.

Raw onions on raw salted herring is yummy. Teeth may require severe brushing some time afterward though.

Re: Trivial things that annoy you
TLM has pretty much always disliked onions, so I just got in the habit of making things without them, and then, with some things, just having optional raw onions like Kael do.
When I was a kid, sometimes I'd eat onion sandwiches, which were just sliced onions on buttered bread. Also, cherry pepper sandwiches were cherry peppers on buttered bread, and mustard sandwiches were just bread and mustard.

Re: Trivial things that annoy you
I generally like onions, raw or sauteed or whatever. The only time I avoid them is when I know a place puts too much of them on their food. Like the local convenience chain store. I'm sorry onions. I like you but not that much. At this point in my life I only know of two foods I don't like: Arugula and prunes.

Re: Trivial things that annoy you
They sell fried (and then dried) onions at the local Chinese stores (which sell Chinese, Indonesian and Surinamese stuff mostly) and I eat that with dal (lentils) and also with instant noodles.
Sometimes I just eat some of them by themselves
