As I said above, late night comedians have been making more sense of the news than possibly any other sources. Here is John Oliver:

Trump on Islam: Neo-Orientalism and anti-Shi'ism

Quote:
Trump wants to site a center for combating extremist ideology in Saudi Arabia! The Wahhabi form of Islam practiced in that country encourages extremist ideology! The Saudis took the practice of takfir or excommunicating Sunnis and Shiites to the next level. In the 19th century they even excommunicated the Ottoman Emperor!
If the Saudis want to combat extremism, they have to formally abjure this unfortunate heritage of Wahhabism and roundly condemn the unilateral branding of people as non-Muslim when they maintain that they are Muslims. (In the Sunni and Shiite mainstream, takfir or excommunication of a Muslim is rare and disapproved).
Contemporary radical extremism in the Muslim world is founded on a few basic principles:
1. takfir or the excommunication of other Muslims for being insufficiently puritanical, anti-democratic, anti-Western, etc.
2. exalting holy war or “jihad” as they understand the word (it does not mean holy war but merely struggle for the faith in the Qur’an) to a basic pillar of the religion.
3. Willingness to commit suicide to blow other people up. Suicide is forbidden in mainstream Islam just as it is in Catholicism.
Saudi Arabia has to condemn all three– excommunication, the militarization of jihad, and homocidal self-sacrifice.
So Miller-Trump are barking up entirely the wrong tree here, as you would expect from completely ignorant people sticking their bare hands into about 50 bee hives.

Washington Post reports that after former FBI Director Comey told the House Intelligence Committee on March 20 that the FBI was investigating any connections between Russian attempts to manipulate the election and the Trump campaign:
Quote:
Trump made separate appeals to the director of national intelligence, Daniel Coats, and to Adm. Michael S. Rogers, the director of the National Security Agency, urging them to publicly deny the existence of any evidence of collusion during the 2016 election.

Coats and Rogers refused to comply with the requests, which they both deemed to be inappropriate, according to two current and two former officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss private communications with the president.
The article states that a memo was produced by the director of the NSA documenting the interaction and request; not clear if the DNI did as well.

Uh, not a legal expert, but that sure as fuck looks like a huge buttress to the obstruction of justice arguments. If one was going to impeach Trump. And if one had the support of- or at the very least no obstruction by- enough factions to make it stick. IMO the Mandarin class of the Federal government plus the Democrats isn't enough. And it won't work if the military, contractors, Wall Street, judiciary, and the Republicans merely lay back- at least one of them is going to have to buy in against Trump to get traction.

That is a good thing, right? Tell them to make a public testimony. If they lie in public, and they are dirty, this is a gift to the law enforcement trying to find corruption.

That's a false reframe. The report is that Trump asked them to state there's no evidence of collusion between members of the Trump campaign and Russia- before any investigation has been completed, and during an active FBI investigation. There's no alternate reality where that's interpreted as a positive. Republicans and FOXNews are running away from the POTUS, even they can't spin this into a sellable lie.

But I would expect no less from a fuckwit like Jerome, who likes to pretend Sandy Hook was a government plot, HIV isn't real, and that he has tenable positions. How can you find the time to defend Trump, what with all the pressure of running those medium-sized corporations, Jerome?

That was a COMPROMISE. The Northern states wanted zero slaves counted, while the Southern ones wanted slaves counted as if they were free people.

Three-Fifths Compromise - Wikipedia
Quote:
The Convention had unanimously accepted the principle that representation in the House of Representatives would be in proportion to the relative state populations. However, since slaves could not vote, white leaders in slave states would thus have the benefit of increased representation in the House and the Electoral College. Delegates opposed to slavery proposed that only free inhabitants of each state be counted for apportionment purposes, while delegates supportive of slavery, on the other hand, opposed the proposal, wanting slaves to count in their actual numbers. The compromise that was finally agreed upon—of counting "all other persons" as only three-fifths of their actual numbers—reduced the representation of the slave states relative to the original proposals, but improved it over the Northern position.[2] An inducement for slave states to accept the Compromise was its tie to taxation in the same ratio, so that the burden of taxation on the slave states was also reduced.

The Three-Fifths Compromise is found in Article 1, Section 2, Paragraph 3 of the United States Constitution, which reads:

Representatives and direct Taxes shall be apportioned among the several States which may be included within this Union, according to their respective Numbers, which shall be determined by adding to the whole Number of free Persons, including those bound to Service for a Term of Years, and excluding Indians not taxed, three fifths of all other Persons.
The Constitution's creators weren't even explicit about slavery.

However, the Confederate Constitution was, and it even contained protection of slavery.

Not seeing how you don't get this outside of partisanship.

Rooting for a team makes you a blind fool.

Think for a moment, say trump is a Russian agent, and these guys are Russian agents, what benefit is there for the comrade agents to decline to publicly declare they are not agents if they are in it with trump?

I know there's no point, but I wanna see what Jerome comes up with.

You understand that counting the slaves 100% would actually have been bad for the slaves, right?

We get that the use of the 3/5th compromise as a metaphor for mistreatment of blacks throughout US history is not a perfect metaphor, as it would've been better for their interests had slaves not been counted at all (for purposes of Congressional apportionment and thus Electoral College apportionment), whereas the metaphor implies that they should've been counted fully to correspond with being treated as fully human.

Just checking, are you guys all ok with this kind of thing?

Read the Full Transcript of Trump’s Call With Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte

Quote:
The Intercept obtained a transcript of the call and is publishing it in full. On the call, Trump enthusiastically endorsed Duterte’s murderous “drug war” and repeatedly addressed the possibility of a U.S. nuclear strike on North Korea. The transcript, which contains numerous typographical errors, is an official document of the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs. Well-placed sources at the Palace and the Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed its authenticity to reporters for the Philippine news outlet Rappler, which collaborated with The Intercept on this story.

Excuse me, dear, but — serious question — do you happen to wipe your ass with your foot?

Flo asks only because my first husband did that, and it proved to be a real deal breaker over time, particularly since he didn’t always properly wash his toes and hence left “mud” stains in Flo’s living-room shag carpet. (Yes, he liked to traipse about barefoot as if he were living in a barnyard. And he smelled like a cow, too.)

Also, please see my question about Vlasic pickles in the other thread in which you and I are “engaged,” so to speak.
