Are you saying they oppose contraception because it would mean they have fewer children to rape? I've never thought of it that way before.

Well....I suppose that one could posit that; that they oppose contraception because they recognize the need for a continuing pool of children to rape.

But I was thinking more that they raped children because conception was not an issue with children...they are incapable of conceiving, i.e., inconceivable. Are most rape victims of Catholic priests male? If so, that's probably another indicator that they are targeting these particular victims with an eye to not producing any damning evidence....particularly in this day and age of DNA testing.

Maybe it's both?

One of the billionaire Koch brothers is building his own personal private Old West crazytown in Gunnison County. At the moment he's peeved that a span of public land runs through his property and is trying to acquire the span via Old West land trading.

Bill is not one of the brothers who own and operate Koch Industries and finance the teabillies. However, you may rest assured that he is a bona fide asshole nonetheless. Individually and through an energy company he owns, Bill has donated $2 million to the superPAC supporting the presidential campaign of sociopathic liar "Mitt" (false name) Romney.

He also spent $65 million to win the America's Cup yacht races in 1992. That's pretty much sufficient to confer Guaranteed Asshole for Life status all by itself.

The Kochs are no stranger to our state. David and Charles, the brothers who run Koch Industries, held one of their semiannual "business retreats" near Vail last year. Bill apparently plans to defile our soil with his presence on a more or less permanent basis.

So this abomination/train wreck of a "personhood amendment" to the Colorado Constitution was supposed be on the November ballot. Similar but less hebephrenic proposed amendments got to the ballot in 2008 and 2010, but were summarily slaughtered.

The 2012 edition might not even get its biannual beat-down at the hands of the voters. The Secretary of State's office says the proponents didn't collect enough signatures to make the ballot. The proponents intend to protest the Secretary's decision formally, but it seems likely to be a tough pull. It's hard to imagine a more sympathetic audience than Colorado SoS Scott Gessler for a wingnutty proposal such as this.

This one should probably be cross-posted in the Conservatives Say Stupid Shit thread, but I ain't doin' it on accounta I'm a lazy socialist douche.

A small group of Catholic nuns did a nine-state bus tour awhile back to protest House Republicans' proposed cuts to food assistance and other government programs aimed at assisting the poor. Rep. Scott Tipton (R-CO) says that the nuns were being inappropriately divisive. Instead of going all culture warrior by advocating for giving the poor free shit, we should focus on the "best way to really address needs and concerns that people have right now[.]" That, of course, involves creating an environment in which the poor can get off their crack-smoking, Kentucky Fried Chicken-eating asses and get jobs.

Two years ago, Tipton rode the wave of anti-incumbent hysteria to unseat a barely-sentient Democrat in Colorado's Third District. His Dem opponent this year is running a smart campaign, but no one seriously expects a Tipton loss. Thus, we figure to get at least two more years of wing-wing-wingnutty commentary like that cited above.

Don't those nuns know that religious folk are only supposed to go protesting queers and sluts (at abortion clinics)?

That article is pretty light on details. I'd like to see the result of that investigation before making my final judgment on it, because it might just be some idiot shooting off his gun elsewhere in the city and not even aiming at the window.

That was what happened when one of Eric Cantor's campaign offices had a window shattered by a bullet. The far-right had a few fun days of working itself into a lather about those damned liberals and their incivility and violence, but it turned out that the bullet didn't even have enough force or the proper angle to penetrate the office's blinds, consistent with falling from the sky after being fired randomly.

So early this morning I was sitting in a car with our candidate for Colorado House District 33, waiting for other people to show up for a campaign function, and found out that:

- Our candidate had never heard the Rmoney thing before. Clearly, Dianne does not do enough Internetting.

- The filthy rich lolbert-masquerading-as-a-Republican who rode the wave of anti-incumbent hysteria to the HD33 seat in 2010 (and did nothing whatsoever after getting there) actually accepted the piddly $30K per year salary that goes with being a state rep. Strangely enough, the hypocrisy is completely unsurprising! Anyhoo, he's not running for reelection because he misses spending time with his chiropractic clinic franchise development business children.

- Our candidate has out-raised the Republican by over $30,000 (a significant accomplishment, considering the severe statutory limits on campaign contributions), and has garnered forty endorsements to the Republican's three.

- The race is nonetheless up for grabs since (1) there's a lot of dumbass wingnuts in these parts and (2) out-of-state interests have spent some $300K on teevee ads trashing Dianne.

- The Republican candidate has taken the liberty of drafting his very first bill. If passed and signed into law, the bill would prohibit any state agency from promulgating a regulation that affects business.

- The campaign is having an election night get-together at a Mexican restaurant I'd never heard of. So, hey Lisa, I now know about another Mexican restaurant for us to try.

1) They pay senators out there $30K? Damn. We have a constitutional ammendment to raise our seanators pay from $12K to $23K. Seems Burger King was stealing some of our best candidates so we had to consider raising their salaries. We do pay them mileage and other expenses so they prolly get like $400K a year in untaxed benefits like most gobberment employees.

2) Mexican restaurant. What's with liberals and illegals? Liberals must love authentic Mexican food. You should have met an an authentic American Resturant like Cracker Barrel or Chick-fi-la.

Plus a per diem. It ain't California ($95K per year plus per diem), but it ain't New Hampshire ($200 per term) either.

They tried to book a Cracker Barrel, but no one involved with the campaign met the 425-lb minimum per-person weight requirement.

Before I forget entirely, the Colorado Women's Alliance has this take on the presidential election. Because, you know, ladies think about everything in terms of the fellas they've dated. Indeed, their brains don't work at all beyond those parameters.

The Obama-in-a-wifebeater artwork is an especially nice touch.

That was so painful to read I skimmed it and left. Does she not know the president is a Harvard grad, former law professor and, well, a president. I doubt she's dated any one of those. Let alone all three.

Mitt's the used car guy in a leisure suit hitting dad up for money to invest in a sure fire thing.

Plus, the once you go black thing.

Not a bad Election Day, all in all.

- Obama beat Rmoney (51.1% - 46.5%) to collect Colorado's nine electoral votes.

- In a grand example of self-serving understatement, the University of Colorado political science profs who predicted a 330-208 electoral blowout for Rmoney acknowledged that "The model was wrong."

- It was clean sweep for incumbents in U.S. House of Representatives races, which leaves the 4-3 Republican edge intact. Neither U.S. Senate seat (both Democratic) was up for grabs this time around.

- At the height of teabilly fervor in 2010, Republicans took over the state House of Reps by a 33-32 margin. Dems retook the House last night. They'll have 37 seats in the House and easily held onto the State Senate as well. It's looking like we'll have an openly gay Speaker of the House and President of the Senate.

- Dianne Primavera, the greatest of all state legislators, recaptured the House seat she lost to anti-incumbent hysteria and PAC money in 2010. Hooray for our district!

Special thanks to lolbertarian Earl Allen, who siphoned off 5% of the vote. Attaboy, champ! :cheesywink:

- Colorado's government hiring system is clunky as hell. Amendment S threw out too much baby with too little bathwater, so I voted no. As expected, it passed handily.

- Amendment 64, the marijuana thingie, passed comfortably. Our bar-owing governor opposed the measure, and he's planning a phone conference with the U.S. Attorney General to urge a vindictive crackdown "hear the federal government's position."

Supporters dubbed the measure the "regulate marijuana like alcohol" amendment, but that's inaccurate. Regulation of weed will be substantially more extensive than regulation of alcohol, but the details will be largely left up to state legislature.

- Amendment 65 passed easily as well. It's an exercise in impotent rage that instructs members of Colorado's congressional delegation to support a constitutional amendment allowing campaign finance legislation, and instructs members of the state legislature to ratify the amendment. It's window dressing, but 70% + support indicates fucktons of dissatisfaction with Citizens United in this here state.

Best un(?)intentionally funny line in the story: "The tool ended up underestimating Obama by 5 to 6 percentage points in many states."
