Democrat 1: We have a pretty big advantage here. No way we can lose this one. Democrat 2: You’re right. Let’s call in famously good candidate John Kerry. Democrat 1: Great idea! *both miss a high five and slap each other in the face*https://t.co/zHWnCNAURC
1. John Kerry did ok in 2004. Bush was popular enough and the economy was good enough that he was favored by a decent margin and Kerry didn't lose by much. He wasn't a great candidate, but he wasn't a trainwreck by any means, and if he had been the nominee in 2008 I'm pretty sure he would've won without much drama.
2. John Kerry was a good Secretary of State.
3. But also John Kerry is very old (although I guess he's younger than Bernie Sanders) and
4. "Democrats" aren't clamoring for him to run again. He might be thinking about running again, but Democrats weren't until this report came out. Now they're thinking about it: specifically, thinking it's a dumb idea.
I don't know why this sort of thing is sometimes attributed to "Democrats." John Kerry is almost certainly the person responsible for this trial balloon.
