Re: Ensign Steve waxes philosophical on the Singularity, a thrad by Ensign Steve
Excuse me for freethinking out loud in the wrong thread. Maybe this has been covered? I think the threshold will have been crossed when an AI expresses its own will. Someday some shiny thing smelling of hot semiconductor will print out, "I don't feel like doing anything right now", or "I want an articulated manipulator". That would be a true indicator of self awareness, imo.

This thread is good and all, but I think we need to hear more about one of the topics excluded in post 0 ...

I think the immediately obvious reaction is "Big Bang Theory Did It!" but then it also makes me think back to Geordi and the number of times he fell in love with that ship. Which who could blame him? That ship is damn lovable.

I've not seen anything anywhere about Transcendence, but that Her movie has been on almost every top ten movies of 2013 list I've seen. I tend to check loads of lists from various places to get ideas for movies to watch and Her is on loads of them.
Looking forward to watching both of them
Edit: ha, not the I was guessing for, but close enough
Either I am not quite smart enough to be appropriately cynical, or HOLY MACKEREL.
This is absolutely amazing.
For everyone who doesn't know who Stephen Wolfram is, he's the guy that invented science and everything.
Yeah, well, I just did a search for "Hellyer canada aliens" in Wolfram Alpha and it came back with a bunch of stats for the movie "Aliens," after announcing that it was assuming that that was what I meant.

No, but seriously... seriousness...

That is what I am studying my masters. When I was there over the summer, my team turned me on to the existence of this project, as it was so completely relevant to my interests, but they only hire PhDs. So the trick now is to get Google to pay me to go to Stanford for my PhD and join the lab there.
(I see the point, but I wish all our journals had melancholic manga-inspired covers...)

Gee, I wonder what the gender breakdown is among society members.

Adam,
Because neckbeards dream of making a subservient woman. It is sexist precisely for the same reason it was chosen. A woman without freewill is the desire of a great many misogynists.
