Re: Crock Pot
I haven't decided yet. I'm considering making garlic crostini as a base -- a sort of open-faced pulled pork sandwich situation -- and I'll probably make some bastardized Italianate version of barbecue sauce to top it.

Re: Crock Pot
I used a crockpot and cooked down a pork shoulder butt 2 weeks ago (way excellent price I found) with some water and red wine vinegar, then took out the fat and bones and shredded it and cooked it again in BBQ sauce and made sammiches.
It was plain fare, but really good.

Re: Crock Pot
How much was your butt? I was shocked at how much mine cost. I was expecting a buck fiddy, maybe two bucks a pound, but it was $3.99.

Re: Crock Pot
I don't remember exactly, I bought it because it was at least two meals worth for 4-5 of us at around 8 bucks total. So it might have been 2.50-3.00/lb?
Kiddo won't eat chicken, and I can't afford beef, so pork it is. Sometimes I find really great deals, other times not so great but way better than a beef equivalent....which even stew meat from the ass of diseased cows is like 6.00/lb

Re: Crock Pot
I read on one of the recipes I looked up that some guy bought pork butt at frikkin' Whole Foods for $2.50 a pound. That's why I was so surprised by the farmers market price.
The good news is it came out delicious, and there's a damn mountain of the stuff so those 22 dollars will easily make another six or so full meals.

Are you talking like grass fed beef? Please tell me that's not supermarket prices for your neck of the woods.
NM, just checked how much the ground beef in the freezer was. I'm too embarrassed to say how much it is.

Re: Crock Pot
Ground beef is cheap and all I buy currently as a cow product at like 2.90/lb.
Why, how much is beef (not ground) at the Winn Dixie or whatever where you are?
And I lied, the pork shoulder butt was 11.50 (total)

Re: Crock Pot
Interesting textural notes: a couple of the submerged areas were so tender that they almost verged on mushy, but it was literally a couple of spots. The rest was fall-apart perfect. The shoulder blade just came out on its own. I didn't even have to pull it. The meat around just opened like a flower.
The top bit that was never under liquid was definitely more chewy. I had to sort of slice it off. That part turned out to be my favorite. the rub made an amazing crust on it and I loved the more toothsome texture of it.
The barbecue sauce I made was just a very basic vinegar sauce: 1 cup apple cider vinegar, 1/2 cup ketchup, 2 Tblsp brown sugar, 1 Tblsp Dijon mustard, 1 Tblsp yellow mustard, 1/2 tsp salt, 1 tsp black pepper, 1 tsp cayenne, 1 tsp cumin, a few stems of thyme. I simmered it on low for about 25 minutes, stirring in the beginning until the brown sugar dissolved, then stirring every 5 minutes or so after that. I fished out the thyme before using the sauce. It was tart with a sweet finish and it thickened nicely, especially once it cooled down a little.

Re: Crock Pot
I know this is an old thread, but I finally thought of it while I had the circular for the store I've been going to for most of my groceries. I don't love the meat selection here, but whatever. (It isn't skeevy meat, but I know less info about where it is from, etc.)
This week's circular for Sprouts has: USDA Choice Cross Rib Roast, Chuck Roast or stew beef for $4.49/lb. NY Strip Steak, Choice, is 5.99/lb. The super sale this week is pork chops or pork roast 1.99/lb. Organic Grassfed beef (from Uruguay) is 5.99/lb. Chicken tenders, fresh, 3.99/lb.
Ground beef at the corner convenience grocery Fresh & Easy is 1.99/lb this week, as are boneless skinless chicken breasts.
The ground beef I had before was local grassfed beef that was like 9.99/lb from WF. Um, not representative.

Re: Crock Pot
The Mor-man and I were cleaning out my storage room to make space for his shit, when we found my old crock pot of at least 15 years ago.
So we cleaned it up and tonight we are kicking it old school with a crock pot feast I started at 7am this morning. Actually hoping it hasn't burned down my apartment as it's been unattended for almost 10 hours.
In the pot - chicken, rosemary, lemon, salt & pepper - potatoes, carrots, onions, chicken stock poured over all of it. Kinda boring but all I had on the fly.
Hope it works out. :
Anyone have some killer crock pot recipes?

Re: Crock Pot
Update - chicken was dry and chewy. I should have put it for 8 hours instead of 10
Will try it again this weekend.

Re: Crock Pot
I haven't used a Crock pot for more than a decade. I do very little cooking anymore except for breakfasts.

Re: Crock Pot
We have given up our Crockpots for Instant Pot. It can cook just about anything, and what it can't we'll cook in our Traeger pellet smoker grill.

This is much safer than a stovetop cooker, which can't do anything but vent steam or explode.

Re: Crock Pot
Don't all pressure cookers have pressure release valves?
