I'm sure that in times past we've had some lulz at the expense of dumbfuck wingnut hack "artist" Jon McNaughton. Well, the Renoir of the Right has outdone his idiot self this time.

It's a picture of an old, very confused man on a.. football field? I had to read the rest of the stuff to find out that it's supposed to be flattering in some way.

I actually think less of this man, and I didn't think that was possible.

The most defining characteristic of the Trump Administration and of the current GOP -- aside from the hypocrisy, dishonesty, and corruption -- is its cruelty.

I mean, they positively revel in it. During the campaign, Trump insisted that "torture absolutely works," and we should be torturing people suspected of terrorism -- to cheering crowds. During campaign rallies, Trump explicitly instructed his followers to physically attack dissenters, and offered to pay the legal costs of those who did so.

The Trump Administration wants to deport "illegal immigrants" who were brought here as infants and who have never known any other home. Trump and his cronies tacitly -- and sometimes not so tacitly -- encourage violence by white supremacists.

Trump and his GOP allies have been desperately trying to kill Obamacare -- despite knowing full well that this will costs millions access to health care. Trump and the Republican-led Congress are slashing or eliminating federal programs that benefit the poor and middle class while giving huge tax breaks to the wealthy.

And so on, and so on. The list is seemingly endless.

It's not that Democratic politicians haven't endorsed cruel policies, of course, but the current administration is officially ripping children away from their families and freely admitting that the cruelty of this practice is the point. And while there's certainly opposition, tens of millions of Americans are just A-OK with this.

Kevin Drum argues in Mother Jones that the cruelty isn't a bug, it's a feature.

Republicans are mean and getting meaner. It’s now the foundation of their party, and Trump has decided to make it a selling point, not something to be ashamed of. They’re just plain mean and they’re proud of it.

And so, what would have been virtually unthinkable just a couple of years ago is now perfectly normal. Meanwhile, the feckless Democrats will put up only a token resistance.

Republicans get more blatantly anti-poor and anti-middle class in their policies; they get more and more anti-science as they deny reality itself when it comes to things like climate change; and they get more and more breathtakingly cruel in their economic, healthcare, and immigration policies. And sadly, tens of millions of Americans are cheering them on.

Well, I think we're rapidly approaching the point where we need to start organizing mobs with pitchforks and torches to march on Congress and the White House.

At best it is lip-service resistance.

The Democrats are doing what they usually do. They speak out about policies/positions they don't like but when push comes to shove they completely cave. Well not cave really, actually they pull down their pants, bend over the table and scream, "Fuck me @GOP, Fuck me good."

The GOP is all to happy to oblige because fucking over people is their modus operandi.

Democrats in the Senate are 100% unified behind a bill to stop this. And they're going to these detention centers to publicize the conditions.

Perhaps they could be doing more, but I often feel like I can't tell what wouldn't be considered "token resistance". Sometimes it seems like the only thing that would be good enough for some people is doing things that require a majority in Congress, which they don't have. They don't have the power in Congress to stop this by themselves.

As you say, the Republicans are a sociopathic party. The "moderates" are spineless or amoral cynics, and grandstanding about "this can't be our party" by folks like Flake, McCain* and Corker hasn't resulted in them actually doing anything. Are you expecting the Democrats to be able to shame the shameless? To appeal to the morality of sociopaths?

How are they going to get this thing passed with 49 votes?

*In McCain's defense, I'm not sure he can do anything without returning to DC. On the other hand, his criticism of Trump hasn't resulted in him doing much of anything even when he was in DC, aside from voting against the ACA repeal.

Pretty much everything McCain has said recently, in what essentially amounts to his "farewell address," reminds me a lot of Eisenhower's warning about the Military-Industrial Complex. Undeniable in the abuses that it identifies, but with no good excuse for spending an entire career in complicity with them.
