The epic struggle of Dog vs Rabbit has been going on for several months now, with the predictable result of Rabbit - 63447 and Dog - 0.

My french mastiff Molly actively searches for them, nose to the ground, posture alert and poised, looking for the smallest hint of the fluffy-tailed menace. Only to walk right past them as they hide in the grass, or to make such laughably feeble attempts at stalking them that you can almost see the rabbits sniggering. They actually get back to eating some more grass before they lazily hop off to their burrows.

It gets even more funny when (and this is rare) one of them gets so cocky and lazy as to let Molly so close that it actually has to jink to get rid of her. She is a pretty athletic dog, but having a tight turning circle is not one of her strong points. The head and front paws seem to be getting the idea, but the rest of her 80+ pounds is just carried along with the sheer momentum. This results in a thump you can hear at 100 paces, and what looks remarkably like a slightly defiant look, as if she means to say "One day, mate. You'll see."

I think this day is the one she dreams about, when she makes vague running motions while sleeping and slight, rather girly-sounding "whuf!" noises in her sleep.

Oh heck I have done it again. I heard some rather pathetic mewling coming from the hedge while walking the dogs with young Vivisectette. It was a dark brown / black kitten, roughly between 2 and 3 weeks old by my reckoning. Still fluffy with kitten-fluff, not moving about much. No sign of any brothers or sisters, no sign of a mother.

The sensible thing to do would be to bring it to a humane shelter. Hell I just got new couches! But now I just got it to drink from a bottle and I am hooked. I should pretend that my daughter is too excited, but that would just be a feeble excuse. The old paternal instinct has kicked in, and now I do not want to give it away anymore.

I will post some pics soon to show you the sappgire-eyed squee

Feeding a kitteh with a bottle and cleaning its poop is creating an unbreakable bond :aww:

Oooh, it's a cutie :melts:

You don't need an excuse. The rule is that if a domestic animal comes to you and needs help, you have to help it. You have to feed it, get it medical care, keep it warm and safe, and then find its owners, find it new owners, or give it a name and a microchip your own self. RULE.

Congratulations! You have a new kitty, and you got it the best way! That is a pretty great cat.

I checked her teeth - she is 4 week old. She is exploring her surroundings, her canines are in AND THEY ARE THE TEENSIESTEST and no pre-molars yet. Which is good, as it means I only have to feed her 5-6 times a day and she can take about 15 mils per sitting.

She drank 25 the first time as she was starving. No poop yet despite a lot of belly rubbing, but I guess she was running on empty so we will try again next feeding time.

I thought you were taking these with a cellphone camera ... what lens in fact and what zoom? Your focus is soft and you have a lot of chromatic noise. :teacher:

Wait, this isn't the photographic advice thread is it?

They are ultra-low quality jpegs so I can get them photobucket - here I will get them a bit better.

It's too bad you couldn't have gotten a kitty that is cute, but that one will do, I guess.

Her eyes will not stay blue, unless she has a bit of Siamese in her, which I doubt. All kittens have those striking sapphire eyes, just like all babies are born with blue eyes. She seems to be very dark brown edging on black, with a very faint tabby pattern coming through.

At 4 weeks she is supposed to be taking about 15 mils of formula 5 times a day. So far she has taken 4 sittings of 20 mils each (capacity for the bottle) in an afternoon and evening. I think she has a bit of catching up to do. Then she pooped, peed, played and passed out. She is now asleep in the crook of Mrs. Sectus's arm. My six year old Vivisectette adores her and will sit for hours just to mind her.

It's kind of nice to be sterilizing bottles again. Having the needs of something cute, tiny and precious determine the pattern of your day. Experience the sheer closeness of sharing your bodies heat with another living thing.

She would not drink from a bottle at first, but then took to it with an astonishing determination for something so tiny and young. There is a fierce spark of life in her, a will to live that you cannot help but be moved by.

I think her name is Brownie now.

I think Snowball would be more appropriate. But Brownie is ok, I suppose.
