I think I can find a more efficient solution, but I restricted myself to the standard count of chess pieces, and this was the first successful try:

Here are a few combinations to try (to attack the whole board) in roughly increasing order of difficulty:
  • five queens (fairly easy)
  • three queens and two rooks (only one solution)
  • three queens and three kings
  • four queens and two pawns
  • the eight normal back-row pieces plus one pawn
  • the eight normal back-row pieces but with both bishops on the same coloured square.

Now also works in Chrome on Mac. If you've tried it before you may need to force it to refresh any old copy of MinAttak.js retained in cache. If you're interested you can see the fix by searching for Mac in the file.

Can you attack the whole board, including the squares the pieces stand on, with only five queens?

The solution I found on Google left those squares unattacked.

You can attack all 64 squares (so including the ones the queens stand on) with five queens.

Warning! Spoiler! One of many possible solutions shown below:

... of course, placing five queens to leave just the squares they stand on not attacked, but attacking all the other squares, is also an interesting puzzle...
