Not a great year for me. Hip problems then a small surgery. So I'm getting back in to biking and pull a dumbass. I took a drink from my water bottle with my right hand without thinking. Got going hit the brake to slow down and of course stopped my front wheel. Ass over bike, water bottles everywhere. Luckily just small road rash and a shoulder that feels like I was punched by an MMA fighter. Already feeling better after a day, but I looked and feel stupid.

I have not eaten a tortilla chip nor a potato chip, nor anything made with sugar or grain, since May 16. I've lost 5" in my waist circumference, also 4.5" in my hips and 1.5" from my neck since I measured April 15th. I've lost a total of 26 pounds since then. And I feel p. good about it.

I got back on the bike and did 22 miles without falling. :cyclist: :cheer:

I have 6 bruises on my legs from :bikefall:. Most are only an inch or so and just look terrible. One of them on my inner thigh is about 4x5 and looks like it was drawn on with purple marker. It's just above the shorts line. But everyone I've shown has a reaction along the line of "DAMN!". So it's sort of cool.

Default Re: Health and Fitness Track, 2014

Yesterday on the balance beam scale at the Y I came in at 168. Today on the digital scale here at home I was 170.6. So goal of losing 10 more pounds this month is clearly in sight (June 29 was the first day I weighed less than 180). So I have shed at least 45 lbs since I started this low-calorie / moderate exercise regimen. Very good chance of reaching my goal of 160 before I go back to work.

As far as exercise, I have had to forego the running for the time being; my knees finally got pissed at me a couple of weeks ago after a 9 1/2 minute mile and they are only now just starting to not be all red and angry at me. As an alternative, I have been getting on a cross-fit at least every other day and maintaining a pace of 10-11 minute miles. Should have bought some beginner's running shoes when I had money a few weeks ago. Have also been keeping with the 3 or 4 sets of 50 incline sit-ups a day and adding kettle bells for working on upper body/chest/arms, plus some machine workouts at the Y. A bit sore today after kettles and chin-up/pull-up machine yesterday.

The next health challenge for me is to address the lack of sleep. Some of that is just life atm; I wake up and remember what's happening and that's it; my brain turns on and that's it, 3 hours or 7 hours of sleep I am up. But even more important than that are times like right now, when I am literally nodding out from exhaustion and falling asleep sitting here. I could go to bed and be asleep in seconds but I don't and then I catch a second wind and stay up to midnight+. Every freaking night, pretty much.

As always I'm trying to eat better but failing often. I've been participating in a "Biggest Loser" competition at work for the past couple weeks so that has helped. I also signed up with a personal trainer; well, I signed up at a place that does one-on-one and small group training. I paid ~$2500 up front for 12 one-on-one sessions (the last of which was yesterday) and 36 small group sessions (the first of which is tomorrow).

So the one-on-one sessions were all weight-lifting. Painful at first (3 days after the first session I literally felt like I'd been beaten with a bat all around the upper body) but not much cardio. The first "pack" session today was more like crossfit; 4 rounds of 9 different exercises. Exhausting!

I am maintaining my weight despite eating like crap and being totally inconsistent with my exercising. I know that part of that is due simply to ambient stuff in my new location (better food, more active lifestyle in general) but I know this is not maintainable forever. My personal shopper, chef, and workout buddy will be here in 2 weeks, so I have that to look forward to.

I did get into the crossfit class mentioned above, but the coaches were really flaky and didn't show up half the time so I dropped the class.

Anyway, here is the real reason I am here:

Workouts for Nerds!

And many more! :awesome:

The other night I went berzerk like a squirrel loose in a church service, ate half a small package of generic double-stuff Oreo-like-only-better cookies, and didn't gain a single pound. This after eating a wonderful Buffalo chicken Subway™ chopped salad with chipotle dressing and jalapenos on it.

If I get 26 Weight Watchers points for the day, it really isn't too smart to use 13 of them on a muffin. (It was a good muffin, but not that good)

One baked good would exceed my daily allowance (carb grams, not points).

"It doesn't get better, you just get used to it."

Applies to boot camp, working out, all kinds of bullshit we put ourselves through.

I went on a carb craving rampage last week and damn, it showed on the scale today.

And I'm gonna punch the food snob at my WW meeting. She bugs me.

Well I'm late coming to the thread but I guess I can share my weight loss experience. For about the past year myweight has been hovering around in the 190's, I'm 5'10". I didn't consider myself fat but definitely overweight and out of shape. I've developed a really bad snore, which could be a sign of sleep apnea. Along with all this, and I believe the biggest cause of my weight gain, I've been severely depressed. I won't go into all the depressions issues here but I'll say that I finally decided to do something about both my weight and depression when I looked at the scale and saw 199.8lbs.
I started cutting out all sodas and sugary snacks. I also immediately started cutting back on carbs. Along with this I resolved to walk my two dogs every day at least 1-2 miles. They needed this as much as I did since they have a small yard to run around in and I'd only been walking them sporadically 1-2 times a week. I know bad dog daddy.
I then started taking an antidepressant. This was pretty scary for me since I was really worried that it would turn me into some zombie. But what I've found is that it has simply kept me from obsessing over everything that I was unhappy about. I'm still unhappy with many things in my life but I now don't feel overwhelmed and instead of just giving up hope I'm resolving to change things. Before I could only make it a couple weeks into a diet and exercise program before giving up and thinking that its impossible. I kept up the walks, started keeping track of calories and carbs. And got back into riding my mountain bike, something I love to do. Just this past weekend I entered my first MTB race and placed 2nd. :w00t: And as of this morning I'm down to 181lbs. :w00t: My goal weight is 170-175 and I hope to get there before the end of the year. I want my New Year's Resolution to finally be to maintain my weight not lose weight.

Oh, you go to my mom's meeting? I did not know that. :giggles:

I'm doing well. Another year at my goal weight and I'm just trucking along. I got taken out of exercise for about 2 weeks when I hurt my back, but I started running again yesterday and I feel fine. My goal is to eat fairly cleanly between now and Christmas. Or at least until our Vegas trip. With possible exceptions for about 100 holiday parties between now and then. Damn this time of year is always tough.

I did find a cheap boot camp in town so I'm thinking of that for next Saturday morning.
