I've noticed the joke telling thing a lot, too. In fact, I'm pretty sure that's one of the main reasons that trolling is so easy, because people assume that women are so implausibly stupid that nothing is so ridiculous or absurd that someone won't think you're serious. (And trust me, I have tried.)
The Sad Puppies things really bums me out. One of the winners they objected to last year was Nalo Hopkinson, one of my favorite living writers. I was so happy for her when she won, and now they are being asses about it and she may never get another chance.

Because it was my general impression that the point of those awards was to recognize science fiction and fantasy as literature as opposed to simply trite, one-dimensional, boilerplate pulp fiction?
It would seem to me that you can either take the genre seriously, or you can demand books that you can safely and accurately judge by their covers.
In their defense, maybe their Mommies cut their sandwiches the wrong way or something and it made them cranky.
