Fucking resumé fonts
This evening I happened across a cool job that I wanted to apply for. Application closed at midnight. And I hadn't updated my resumé. This is a recipe for a fun Friday night.
I decided that my old TeX-based resumé, while very nice, was too cumbersome to maintain and tweak, so I re-started in InDesign. The only thing I really gave up by abandoning TeX was the excellent CM Bright font that comes with the TeXLive Distribution. So I started looking for a new font in InDesign. This is one of those things that feeds my crazy OCD perfectionism thing. I went with Calibri for the one I submitted, but I'm still not quite sure.
My selection criteria are basically this: - Professional
- Simple and conservative
- Highly readable
- No serifs, dammit
I will basically use four styles of whatever font I use: regular, bold, italics, and small caps for section headings.
To facilitate review of these finalists, I have included a lot of information here. The font name is in small caps in the size that small caps will appear in the resumé (i.e. the words "Arial 11" are actually in Arial 13). The words "the human" are in bold in the regular font size. The word "was killed while" are in regular style in regular font size. The words "trying to escape" are in italics in the regular font size.
Also liv or vm could you fix my typo in the poll? It says "Verdana 11" and should say "Verdana 10."

Re: Fucking resumé fonts
Calibri has grown on me since I obtained one of the newer versions MS Office. But for business correspondence I stick with Ariel just because.

Where's Century Gothic, the ink-saver font?

Re: Fucking resumé fonts
I'm hooked on Calibri 11 now. It looks clean and translates well from casual to professional. In your comparison pic though it would look small. So Calibri 12.
ETA: And oh yeah, good luck with the job. Pro tip: get the font wrong and they won't even read your resume.

Re: Fucking resumé fonts
I don't see much of a difference between most of them, tbh. I'll pick Corbel just to be different, and because of the cheap faux champagne that sustained my first deeply broke New Year's after I graduated college.

I was thinking it would demonstrate your frugality. Prospective employers might be impressed with that.

Re: Fucking resumé fonts
I'm fond of Corbel. It's good-looking and readable, plus it's not ridiculously overused yet, so it stands out.

Re: Fucking resumé fonts
Seeing as Comic Sans isn't on the list, I'll choose Verdana 10. It's what we use for our "house style" at work, so it must be professional

Re: Fucking resumé fonts
On some of those I can't even tell the bolded section is, you know, bolded. It looks the same. So, I voted for Ariel 11, Myriad Pro 11, and Verdana 10, the ones I could most easily see the difference between bold text and regular.

Re: Fucking resumé fonts
I'm really old, and used to be a typesetter, when typesetting wasn't done on a computer. I don't consider any san serif font to be conservative.
For resumes, I would probably go with Century Oldstyle or Schoolbook, for legibility and "conservative-ness". For san serif fonts, I would choose Euphemia or Corbel, since they are the least compressed of the fonts you have chosen. Compressed fonts tend to be more difficult to read.

I've had the same reaction and I've looked for a non-Times serif font that I like, but every one I choose makes my resumé look either really pompous or really dense. I think serifs make things generally less readable, but that may be because I am so used to sans serifs as the default on my web browser. I have no idea if people will be reading my resumé on a screen or on paper.

I like the Euphemia best out of those, except what is up with the word spacing?
Although I'd recommend something like Fraktur for the most authoritative type presentation.

Yeah I dunno, I couldn't figure out the spacing thing with Euphemia. I didn't have it justified or anything.

I would normally have picked the times new roman but since that was not an option I picked Arial
